I am glad to see something is being done to try and reduce the dirtinesss (which won't work- but that's another issue)
but hllywood- I gotta agree with you - why is this an NBA issue?

kind of dumb. how much money does the university make off these kids? I know the " Free " education they **** should be worth it. nothing is free. if these kids get hurt and can't compete they are at risk of losing the scolarship. Lets be fair about this, coaches get endorsement deals and tv shows and yet these kids don't see a dime. the system is broken and needs to be adjusted and re worked to bring it up to more recient times. USC should be in trouble though for being dumb enough to get caught.

Vaughn9,

I agree with you. Not to mention the amount of money these Universities get to keep. Universities don't pay taxes. I saw a report the othe day saying Harvard has like a billion dollars and pays taxes on none of it. They were thinking about changing that for Universities, which of course has Harvard complaining. It is amazing how they sress "education". They don't give a flying (blank) about education. Half the guys on the roster don't qualify to even go their those schools compared to an average student with no athletic ability.

Hitman - very good info that you mention.
Let's face it - NCAA Division 1 basketball and football players, more often than not, are athlete students, or simply athletes, instead of student-athletes like they should be. In other words, their sport takes priority over academics, when it should be the other way around.
About your comment about Harvard and education - your statement is a little too strong. Universities do care about education, but they are also running a business. It would be fair to say that they have a sort of schizophrenia where their motives are mixed / split.

why is this news, its been really bad since the olympics were over.

September 2, 2008  11:27 AM ET

to hitman of course some students can get a five hundred on the sats and still get into usc if hes a good football player but atleast kevin durant is trying to get his college degree maybe hes a trend setter for maybe........lebron james? hahahah nah

September 2, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Next up Lebron James agent under investigation for giving him a hummer?

Who cares all he gave him was a house warming gift. David Stern is not working its time to part ways with him.

Please, if you think most athletes do anything BUT play sports and party in college you are sadly as delusional as the parents who think the fraternal/sorority system is about creating upstanding members of society.

These guys should get paid to play in college, so when they don't go pro, they don't end up broke AND without an education.

September 2, 2008  05:22 PM ET

Cmpnyflow,

I agree, the school should pay the athletes for playing for them. They should also get a free education and if they fail to graduate, they should be forced to reimburse the school for the cost of tuition.

Then they could either go or not go to class since, in essence, they would be wasting their own money. If they leave early, they should have to pay the school back if they get drafted by an NBA team (or if they go play in Europe).

With some money in their pockets they'd be less-likely prey for the leeches.

What the hell are you talking about? That is the most ridicolous thing i have read all day.Why the hell would they pay college athletes to play?Do you know how many players are in college basketball? Lets not forget football baseball etc. That is what scholarships are for you idiots. If they were focused on their education then 9 times out of 10 they wouldnt leave for the NBA before they got a degree. That is the athletes decision if they want to take that risk, but dont expect NCAA to compensate them for playing .You guys cant be serious.you better hope I am the only one whos sees this.
