The 76ers are close to signing 6-foot-9 veteran forward Donyell Marshall, according to a league source. Marshall could meet today with the Sixers and sign a veteran-minimum contract - for an estimated $1.26 million - sometime this week. Marshall, 35, was recently waived by Oklahoma City. The source said the Sixers had been in discussions with Marshall since last week. A native of Reading, Pa., Marshall has played in 932 NBA games and has career averages of 11.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

Good, now he can go back out and get him some early morning trouble also.....

September 2, 2008  05:43 AM ET

Good move, Philly! You need those really good towel-wavers at the end of your bench ...

September 2, 2008  06:05 AM ET

So what?
All he will ever do is it on the bench behind Andre igoudala and Elton brand

C'mon, be nice. Donyell Marshall is gradually becoming an iron-man of the league in terms of longevity. If he has been taking good care of himself, he could be a solid player for another 3 or 4 years.

Solid 3-point shooter that can play SF for 15-18mpg

If the Hornets can sign Sean Marks then Marshall would do for the Sixers.

September 2, 2008  08:47 AM ET

Why does he still have a job? He can't even consistently hit the three anymore and that was his sole purpose in the league.

September 2, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Good bench player, but I do agree with hitman. Lately that shot of his has been failing him.

September 2, 2008  09:03 AM ET

I don't see the point in picking him up....
why not try to find a young kid who may develop into something unexpected
he is well past his prime and at best he was no better than an average player......

Hmmmm....just wrote basically the same thing as I did for the Juwan Howard t&r-

September 2, 2008  09:30 AM ET

He can hit the three, something they need badly

September 2, 2008  09:34 AM ET

Well here is Brands backup but he can swing to other spots on the floor. Great catch and shoot 3 pt shooter. Had a bad last couple seasons but should fit well into the Sixers role. I was hoping Utah would sign him for a league minimum.

September 2, 2008  11:19 AM ET

what were his stats when he was at conneticut? what i think is that his shooting touch really isnt there anymore he just looks like this fat guy on the court and also remember the one video were lebron james was laughing at him because he forgot his jersey while checking who plays so little to forget to wear a jersey when checking in?

September 2, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Role players don't get much love, but when you can mix them together like the exotic molecules that the Spurs have cooked up in recent seasons, it can work out well. Of course Elton Brand isn't Tim Duncan, but that's not Donyell Marshall's fault.

"He can hit the three, something they need badly"

He USED to hit the 3's
his stats have been steadily dropping ...last year he hit only 28% from 3
He is also basically useless as a defender

I know they're giving him only a mil......but i'd rather have someone that can do a little something on the floor than an aging 3 pt shooter who isnt' as good anymore

September 2, 2008  06:21 PM ET

Sigh....

September 2, 2008  08:34 PM ET

Marshall who? I didn't know he was still in the NBA.

September 2, 2008  09:11 PM ET

Does anyone remember george lynch or aaron mckee. every good team needs some veteran leadership to win in the post season. The sixers have all the young talent (iggy, thaddy young, dalembert) and now they have brand, miller and marshall for some leadership. i like what eddy is doing down there in philly. first time i have been really excited for the sixers season to begin

September 2, 2008  09:59 PM ET

He's a good shooter, hit 12 three's in one game once.
