Bears contact free-agent tackle

The Bears have had contact with free-agent tackle Willie Anderson, but the chances of the veteran joining the Bears are slim to none, according to an NFL source. Anderson, 33, was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday. He became a backup to Stacy Andrews at right tackle and refused to take a pay cut. He had a streak of 116 consecutive games stopped last season due to chronic pain in his right foot and also battled knee problems. Anderson signed a five-year contract extension in 2005 reportedly worth $32 million. Money is part of the reason he doesn't fit into the Bears' plans despite the team's need for help on the offensive line.

would be a wise move to offer a potential HOF Tackle a small contract with heavy incentive bonuses.

I don't care if you had the Cowboys offensive line in Chicago, you're still doomed as long as Orton and Rex are your options. The Bears season is over and it aint even got going.....Sad....

it's amazing what a superbowl loss can do to an organization

September 2, 2008  09:21 AM ET

The Bears need a whole lot more help than a guy with bad knees, Hall of Famer or not! They might want to start with a new D coordinator and a new O coordinator as Babich and Turner are clueless! Heck, they might consider an entire new coaching staff as the act of the laid back, non-confrontational Lovie Smith is wearing thin!

It's going to be a long, ugly season for Bears fans!

Death throes. This season is over before it started, largely due to incompetence at the management level. The defense is playing terribly; it's only a matter of time before the offense sputters. The best "do something" player the Bears have at present is Hanie. (Hester can't do it alone.) Whether they get a left tackle or not this season is verschmuckt. Get rid of Lovie and Jerry!

I would bet that he wants a heck of a lot more than a minimum contract wit with heavy incentive bonuses. And I don't think it would be wise to invest much with those health issues.

And for those people hating on Bear QBs: it's not just the QBs that are the problem. It's teams constantly rushing an extra defender because WR don't get much separation, or when they, drop the ball. It's also a weak OL that keeps the QB under pressure. And it's a running game that hasn't scared anyone in a long time.

"i hope to god he doesnt end up as a steeler, that would be awful to see.."

i'm dreading him ending up in Cleveland. the brownies 2.0 can't keep off our cool-aide. 1/5 of their silly team is ex-bengals.

September 2, 2008  02:16 PM ET

They should be going after Simms instead!

September 2, 2008  02:44 PM ET

simms and anderson in bears uniforms. that would actually help them win more games this season.

September 2, 2008  03:23 PM ET

I suggest bribing him with Lou Malnat's deep dish pizza (plenty of sausage).

September 2, 2008  03:24 PM ET

Can we draft another GM in the first round?

September 2, 2008  04:18 PM ET

Simms would be a good choice, but an old Tackle would not. If the Bengals cut him have to consider that there's most likely something wrong with him, like age.

September 2, 2008  04:33 PM ET

Who are these Bears?
They could use Jody Foster and
The Bad New Bears team for all I care.
We???ll see what they really need soon enough!!!

September 2, 2008  09:02 PM ET

The Bears are going no place and fast! There is just no hope for them.
"GO VIKINGS"!

You can put a finger in the dike but you can't stop all the leaking - try getting a PROFESSIONAL QB first !!!

September 2, 2008  09:33 PM ET

The Vikings are now the most overrated 8-8 team in NFL history.
Take a look at your own QB mess yodel boys.
