McCabe will cost Leafs draft pick

Getting rid of Bryan McCabe apparently will cost the Maple Leafs a draft pick as well, TSN reported last night. The deal between the Leafs and the Florida Panthers, which is expected to be made official at 11 am this morning, will bring defenceman Mike Van Ryn to Toronto. The framework of the trade was worked out last month but the transaction was delayed until McCabe received a $2 million US bonus due Sept 1. The Leafs wooed Van Ryn back in 2000 when he first turned professional, but the London native opted to sign with the St. Louis Blues.

There you go, bgm. Van Ryn is finally coming to town. Now what do you think about the Leafs and their playoff hopes?

September 2, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Okay....which round will this draft pick be in?

September 2, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Probably be a second or third round pick. Good luck to McCabe. Get ready Van Rynit's going to be a long season.

September 2, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Stupid trade....just for spite.

September 2, 2008  09:05 AM ET

McCabe AND a draft pick AND $2 mill bonus money for Van Ryn? The Leafs must really be desperate to get rid of this guy! But then, with the contract attached to his name, they're lucky they found someone willing to do a deal with.

September 2, 2008  09:12 AM ET

So it's decided then. I'm certainly glad something is...
McCabe needed a change of scenery and the Leafs have improved defensively and in the pocket book.

getting McCabe out ot Toronto was a must. That was a distraction that the clubhouse is better without. I think Van Ryn makes the D stronger in Toronto and I may be nuts (usually thought so by bgm) but I think the Leafs have a chance at making the playoffs...thing is it may be next year

September 2, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Or the next....

September 2, 2008  10:56 AM ET

If he wasn't enjoying Toronto, what fun does he think he's going to have playing for this team that may be even worse?

BETTMAN S***S

Good, they actually moved him, knock on wood. Atleast Leaf fans no longer have to worry about McCabe's boneheaded passes or watching him try that scissor-hip check thing of his a catch nothing but boards and air. Playoffs are a possibility but we still need more offense.

Welcome back, Spiny.

Sounds cheap to me. Always a good thing to get rid of anchors.

My guess is the draft pick is indirect compensation for the pick Florida sent north last year for Chad Kilger...

That would make sense. Where is Kilger now?

Hey Spiny, you're back. Have you checked PUCKHEADS?

September 2, 2008  03:43 PM ET

bgm...you know i like ya man...but come on...

Pete

I lost a bet!!!!!!!! I would never say that if i had no other choice!!! I'm a man of my word and i have to uphold the bet.

The leafs will make the play-offs!
bostongm | 09/02/08, 03:57 PM

Did the bet say anything about what you are not allowed to say after the bet is over?

I missed the TD. Toronto is great but I think Montreal when I am hungry or sad.

Toronto has the Buffalo Bills playing there these days. There is an obvious curse. I call it the nano/gremlin/northern latitude sports curse that arrived in the US around 1900. It touched the mighty Pittsburgh Pirates of 1903 or so then went to Chicago in baseball variantthen soon to Boston looking for new sox, then to Minnesota where it got attached to NFL horns but would lie dormant till January or so. It soon found new horns in Buffalo and helped the NFC enjoy four SBs. It has been resting in LA recently in the NFL and loves Silver and Black. It is looking for another team to vitiate or eviserate. By my calculations, it has visited Boston or Seattle in the NFL for short visits in recent years. But it will be in the NHL next and have tremendous impact. The further north it goes the further the team goes before collapse. Mostly to championship contests. And it can stay or revisit for years. Doesn't like the Burgh,

I have a cure but nobody wants to treat me to dinner in Montreal to discuss it.

Yes Mike, it could go to Cleveland or Detroit but why add disaster to a a predestroyed item?
