Piniella hints at lineup changes

Manager Lou Piniella hinted lineup changes could be coming today in an effort to break the Cubs out of a hitting funk that has lasted almost a week. Immediately after the Cubs were stymied by Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt in a 3-0 shutout Monday, Piniella met with coaches in his office to talk about the lineup before his postgame session with the media. He was short on details, but he already tried to shake some hits out of struggling right-fielder Kosuke Fukudome by moving him to No. 2 on Monday. ''That's a good spot to hit in,'' Piniella said. Fukudome went 0-for-4. He hit .193 in August and has just three hits in his last 20 at-bats.

nowhere is a good place for him to bat for the time being

September 2, 2008  08:23 AM ET

with september call-ups it makes no sense to keep him and derrek lee in there because they arent doing crap lately...

and its showing..

Hoffpauir for 1st and reed johnson for right field....thats my solution...keep it where its been hot...

September 2, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Fukudome has needed to be benched or at least platooned for about two months

Cubs about to self-destruct. Watch out for the Brewers!

September 2, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Cubs will be fine...

September 2, 2008  09:27 AM ET

I wonder why the brewers Fan thinks the cubs are going to self-destruct after winning 85 games...strange ;)

Why is Fukudome even in the line up at all? He looks bored out there. He swings the bat like an amateur. He's a liability. And, it's not like they don't have anybody to take his place. Get him out of there! Let him sit and reflect on why he left Japan and signed a contract to play in America.

Sweet Lou, shaking it up.

September 2, 2008  10:52 AM ET

They should also call up Samardja, that guy was electric when Wood was out in injury.

September 2, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Isn't he already with the Cubs?

Okay, here's the perfect lineup for the Cubs:

1. SS Theriot
2. 2B or RF DeRosa
3. LF Soriano - put your foot down, Lou, this guy is not the consummate leadoff type so you convince him that he's going to get more RBIs and better pitches to jack esp hitting in front of:
4. 1B Lee
5. 3B Ramirez
6. C Soto
7. RF Fukudome or 2B Fontenot
8. CF Edmonds or Johnson
9. pitcher

I'd probably flipflop the Edmonds/Johnson tandem for Fukudome/Fontenot depending on which guy is the hottest and occasionally put Fontenot second because he HAD better numbers this season than DeRosa, who's coming on.

Look it, the Cubs have a better overall lineup w/ DeRosa in RF and Fontenot at 2B and Fukudome on the pine. Might as well admit that!!!

first of all the cubs will be fine, but i agree it is time to shake up the lineup and he must start with fukudome start using him in a platoone situation and move derrick lee down in the order and cause he has not done anything the last two months. One thing for sure lou will not be afraid to make changes

The Cubs have a much more difficult schedule the rest of the season plus have 6 more games left against the Brewers. If they can win those 6 games more power to them. Can you say....CHOKE....again.....

September 2, 2008  12:41 PM ET

brewers fan must not remember last year when saying CHOKE.....again. cant stand the cubs but the brewers did some major choking last year.

September 2, 2008  12:51 PM ET

I heard the Brewers have bought Bartman tickets to all the remaining games at Wrigley

September 2, 2008  01:09 PM ET

I wouldn't mess with the lineup too much...........they seem to be doing something right by winning all those games
