Cavaliers getting desperate?

A report from the Cleveland Plain Dealer has linked the Cleveland Cavaliers to free agent forward Juwan Howard. They cite his numbers from Houston two years ago - 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in 27 minutes per game - and label him "productive." At 35, Howard is not exactly going to improve, and frankly he's one of the least productive players in the league regardless of what his numbers are. He doesn't defend, doesn't rebound well, and brings very little to the game beyond just what the box score says. There's a reason he sat at the very, very end of the Mavericks' bench last season. The Cavaliers are also interested in Lorenzen Wright, most recently of the Sacramento Kings. Wright had by far his most productive years as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, when he nearly averaged a double-double in 2001-02 but then began to fall off dramatically.By the time he began his second stint as an Atlanta Hawk in 2006-07 he seemed to have very little interest in actually playing basketball. In 2007-08 he managed to appear in just 18 games. The fact that the Cavaliers are even rumored to be interested in either of these guys is a sure sign of desperation in Cleveland's front office. It's not clear why there's desperation - neither Howard nor Wright has any prayer of out-playing Anderson Varejao or Ben Wallace for minutes at the four, but we don't make up the news . . .we just write about it.

This is a strange article. CAVS are overloading in 4 & 5's. They need more shooters or PG. They are wasting roster spots for these guys. There are guys in the D-League that could outplay these 2. They need a consistent low post or a shooting big man.

Fab 5!!!

Too bad the article is pretty much spot on. Juwan just isn't what he used to be with the Bullets. I'd think Chris Webber would be the Fab 5 member you'd want to take a look at if anything -- and the man is crippled and retired now. So I guess what I'm saying is.... give up the chase.

If they sign Howard or Wright, that is a clear indicator Varejao is being shipped out of town for help

September 2, 2008  08:45 AM ET

depth at guard most likely

September 2, 2008  08:46 AM ET

This is hilar;ious . . .. Lebron is a good as gone when his contract expires. The cavs are doing nothing to make that team better. I liked the pickup of the Milwaukee point guard, but they still are not better than the top teams in the east. Bye . . Bye . . .Lebron

September 2, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I agree with DJ. If they acquire one more big man, then they are going to trade for depth in the back court. I am not a big Varejao fan but there are teams out there who could use a big man.

jeez- juwan howard?
I mean what is the point of getting an immobile, OLD,
AVERAGE (in his prime) player ?

September 2, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Hitman - you hit it on this one.
The article talks about the Cavs' desperation, and apparently, they feel pressure because of one thing - and one thing only - Lebron's expiring contract in 2 years and the possibility of him leaving to go to New York (ie Nets or Knicks) or perhaps the Euro League (LOL).

September 2, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Here's a hint for the Cavs... And if they want to save their franchise, they should consider it...
If there aren't enough talented free agents left in the NBA, and you're just an average working-class town without the draw of a big market city, then learn from others in your position and start recruiting from abroad !!
Take a look at San Antonio. They basically had one superstar - Tim Duncan, and built around him by getting the best players from France, Argentina, and elsewhere. They were also not a big geographic market, but they managed to keep Duncan (after doing the same with Robinson) for the long haul. So, it is possible, with some creative recruiting.

"So, it is possible, with some creative recruiting."

I agree with you jay......BUT
more that 'creative recruiting' it is simply GOOD MANAGEMENT

getting LBJ was not rocket science- they sucked and got the 1st pick
- almost everything they've done since has been BAD management

September 2, 2008  09:29 AM ET

The only reason this team should be feeling desperate is if they think they are about to lose the best player in the NBA to some huge market in a year or two...

Oh wait, ring the panic bells...

Agree with all above posts - Jay, jgb etc

The problem is Danny Ferry. This job is overhwhelming him, and they should have never hired him as GM. Just like Dubya, he looks like a lameduck too.

September 2, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Ferry is smarter than you guys think. Trust me, evrything he's doing has a cause/effect clause to it. He's not trying to get a team that will necessarily blow teams out the water now. However, when LBJ's contract is up, he needs to have money to compete with everyone else, but most importantly, he wants to have the money to go after other caliber players to help LeBron out. Quick fixes in the NBA are abnormal, but are possible if you have the right pieces, at the right time (Boston Celtics).

P.S. New York and New Jersey are worse off than the CAVS, so I doubt it very seriously if he goes to either.

September 2, 2008  09:53 AM ET

The Cavs don't need more shooters - they've got Lebron. They do need people in the post, because Ilgauskas is aging and Ben Wallace can't score.

They DO, however, need a solid point guard that's a legitimate scoring option as well. I hear Gary Payton is out there for an attractive price.

September 2, 2008  10:10 AM ET

This just tells you how much faith they have in Ben Wallace.

September 2, 2008  10:26 AM ET

"Ferry is smarter than you guys think. "
" New York and New Jersey are worse off than the CAVS"

I COMPLETELY disagree with your 1st point -
And the only reason the cavs are better off is because they have LBJ
-you take him off and they are the WORST TEAM i the league

September 2, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Ben Wallace is garbage!!! Worse than shaq at the offensive line... what they need is a cosistent outside threat.. So when Lebron drives in he has someone to kick it out to, just like Jordan did.

September 2, 2008  10:30 AM ET

-you take him off and they are the WORST TEAM i the league

That makes no sense, because you could say the same thing about the Lakers w/o Kobe, the Heat w/o Wade, and the Nuggets w/o Melo. Everybody knows LBJ is the CAVS, but the other players I mentioned are their respective organizations too. With the exception of the Celtics, every team in the NBA only has ONE superstar.

September 2, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Cavs are getting cheaper

September 2, 2008  10:41 AM ET

TEEmon-- even with WADE the HEAT were the worst team in the league...
