Why U.S. passed on Adu, Altidore

USA Coach Bob Bradley does not go into great detail about his roster decisions. He just doesn't. Few coaches do. Sorry. That said, I did get him to talk a little bit today here in Miami about the decision to add young players such as Marvell Wynne and Michael Orozco while passing on Freddy Adu and Jozy Altidore. It ain't much, but here you go: The first thing he pointed out was that the red card suspension to Steve Cherundolo, on top of injuries to Jonathan Spector and Frankie Simek, necessitated the need for defensive help on the right side. Frankie Hejduk is likely to start, but Bradley needed reinforcement. As for the young attacking players, "I am not going to talk about all the players. When you pick a roster, you take all sorts of things into consideration and every roster says a lot of different things. I guess if I were to say one quick thing about young players is that we are always watching, we are always keeping track of how they are doing and we always are trying to continue to move the players who have earned the opportunities along at the right speed."

So in other words, there were more pressing positional needs... but if they continue improving as they have, it will be impossible to ignore them. This IS World Cup Qualifying... so it should be comprised of a good mix of talent... the young slots are obviously taken.

Soccer is soo stupid what a easy horrible sport

September 3, 2008  08:35 AM ET

And how does Eddie Johnson keep "earning the opportunities", praytell Mr. Bradley?

September 3, 2008  08:37 AM ET

the problem with Adu and Jozy is that they are being introduced to new environments and new teams.... they need time to assimilate and fight for a spot....

some may argue that bradley is also on a new team and needs to do that, but he is more familiar with europe and their schedule.... same can be said about Edu... personally id like to see Edu staying in Glasgow and fight for his spot as well.. but i dont feel MB needs too (not saying he's a guarentee starter, he'll have to fight like the others, but with a recently promoted team i feel he stands a good chance with his work ethic and talent)...

ALSO, Jozy is coming off an ankle injury that hasnt fully recovered yet... Adu is our smallest player.... Cuba, T&T, and Guat are hackfest teams... id rather they not play them and remain healthy then stand a chance to get hacked to injury

Oh and btw, SeanWhitt10 is a monitor-tanned virgin who still lives with his parents at the age of 35.

Or at least, that's the only reasonable assumption about him, because what other sort of spectacular loser with nothing better to do with his sad life trolls the T&R section of a sport he doesn't even like?

September 3, 2008  08:39 AM ET

serotonin- EJ may not be the best option, but he's capable of scoring (altho his past performances dont show that)

id love it if EJ never got a call up until he shows improvement, but he has experience with these types of teams.... the only forwards i could see to take his place is Cooper or Daviess... and possibly Buddle.... ugg, EJ in the lineup sounds soooooo awful :(....

September 3, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Just positional needs. Nothing more nothing less.

September 3, 2008  09:02 AM ET

I'm not sure how EJ keeps winnign chance after chance. Same thing with Josh Wolf. Really Bradley is losing my confidence with every pick and match.

September 3, 2008  09:04 AM ET

PS. Kinda like your momma, Sean Whitt.

September 3, 2008  09:18 AM ET

d-wreck- wolff hasnt been asked back since the 3 big friendlies... and i dont expect him to get another call up either...

September 3, 2008  09:49 AM ET

I know! Yes, but remember those three friendlies? I mean, could you figure it out? The guy couldn't perform or star in the 2nd Div Bundesliga. In fact he scored 3 goals or something all season. He was so bad that his 2nd Div team didn't care to have him back--yet he earned a spot with Bradley. Its hard to say sometimes why the heck Bradley picks the duds he does. Those three friendlies were not that long ago...

And isn't Orozco the guy who threw the elbow that got red carded and lost the US team any chance in the olympics (in the last game/)? Has he really "earned" a spot on the team?

I've been in a bad mood lately--ever since the Subotic thing.

September 3, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Orozco is getting playing time with his club.... he shows great potential..

if we were chastizing players for 1 screw-up play then we'd be losing a number of our players....

im not trying to forget what he did, and how that play pretty much determined our odds of moving on.. im simply stating that outside of that 1 error, he has been solid in every US game he's played so far....

and lets not forget that Nowak had him playing outside LEFT rather then his comfortable position at CB.... not using that as an excuse but showing he's a versitile defender...

--

as for wolff... again it was a head scratcher... but with Jozy injured, Cooper tied up with a failing FCD (not to mention he wasnt as red hot then), the options were limited.... Wolff has experience, altho just like a good number of our forwards, he lacks productivity....

September 3, 2008  10:41 AM ET

What frustrates me is that we have to be developing the younger players by giving them exposure and experience--in exhibitions, in qualifiers, whenever. We can play the young studs and qualify, and we've seen what these other guys do in the WC. If we're going to set the goal of being a force in the world, then we've got to take the chances that could get us there. Stop recycling players who once represented our best and play those who can realize a brighter future.

September 3, 2008  10:43 AM ET

As for EJ, give it up. He simply has never become what everyone hoped. I don't know why he keeps getting chances other than his physical promise, fulfilled on occasion. Some will argue we have no other options. Ridiculous. Try someone else like the folks mentioned in some of the earlier posts. Some top players have called Cooper the best player in MLS this season. Give him more of a shot than the token appearances he's had.

September 3, 2008  11:15 AM ET

kopper- lol, you meam cooper's token appearance when he scored a goal?? our most productive forward yet...

September 3, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Okay, maybe I'm being to hard on Orozco, but I guess with the US dropping out of the Olympics via stupid fouls, Subotic wanting to play for Germany instead of the US because of stupid Rongren quotes, and the MLS teams getting completely EMBARRASSED yesterday by two very poor clubs from Panama and Trinidad (I don't want to hear about injuries) has made me a little grumpy. What the Revs did yesterday should embarass the MLS and any American with pride and hopes for his domestic league. The aggregate was 6-1 for Joe Public over the Revs. Downright embarrasing! Then Chivas blew it against Tauros FC from Pananma! I've just been in a cynical mood lately. I, like many of you, have stuck up for the MLS when it gets bad-mouthed. I'm done with that for awhile until they win me back over....

September 3, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Otergod, I think maybe Cooper got one other appearance. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just can't see why he doesn't get the call.

September 3, 2008  11:47 AM ET

D-Wreck, it appears MLS is just throwing the CONCACAF CL, its kind of hard to criticize their performance when no one cares, the MLS teams should have jsut declined to participate, total waste of time

while I totally agree with everyone on Bradley's poor sqaud selection, Oter has a point on the hackfest thing, that last game against Guatemala was a joke, we should just forfeit the games we have scheduled against them from now on, we were lucky none of our guys lost an ACL or suffered a major concussion

September 3, 2008  12:21 PM ET

I'd rather see Kenny Cooper or Nate Jaqua then EJ

no kidding...those guatemalans were the most blatant unidimensional hackers I believe I have ever seen (i've played against a few but never actually seen it so blatantly at a USMNT level)...
