Hal and Hank Steinbrenner agree they want Brian Cashman back as the Yankees' GM, The Post has learned. According to a MLB source, the Steinbrenner family has decided Cashman is the man to lead the organization back from a nightmarish season that will end with the Yankees missing playoffs for the first time since 1993. Cashman, who last week shouldered the blame for the dismal season, met with Hal and Hank yesterday at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. No contract offer was made but, according to the source, Cashman is aware of the Steinbrenners' wishes.

I don't know ... he made such a production out of sticking with the kids, then he picks up guys like Pudge and Ponson to fill in the blanks ... he's a decent GM, but wishy-washy. He was lucky enough to inherit what he did when he took over. Hasn't shown me he can set it up like his predecessor did. But, if they want him back, who am I to say anything? Not like I could have done any better. Although I never would have done the Farnsworth-for-Pudge thing. Oy that one sucked.

He deserves to keep the job. There were a lot of injuries to the starting pitchers that changed everything. Who would do better? Those trades were at a time when it seemed the team was making a move and was only two games behind the Red Sox.

It would be tough to replace the GM with the stadium move so close. Bring back Stick!

Somehow I don't see a lot of other teams lining up to sign this guy.....$235 million to possibly finish a distant third?

September 3, 2008  07:48 AM ET

i bet the Phills take a stab at him

September 3, 2008  07:52 AM ET

It would be a great move..

Afterall, the farm experiment failed miserably for them, of course they want him back-he knows how to BUY up the players. Look for big money to be spent next year in NY

September 3, 2008  08:18 AM ET

I'm looking forward to the Yankees spending a fortune next year on free agents.....It will be the 80s all over again.

"There were a lot of injuries to the starting pitchers that changed everything"

- every team has injuries- granted.....
but his decisins on acquiring pitchers through trades or FA has been ABYSMAL....he has basically picked up NO ONE of value since we last won a title (other than Mussina 8 years ago)

Finally, some sense from the Steinbrenners. Cashman is needed in NY.

I want the Yankees to be better. Nothing like the Sox/Yankees series in Octobah. I'm going to miss it this year.

I think most Yankees fans want Cash back.

Atro...
Cash picked up Pudge, half of a year to fill the void of Posada, Posada is back next year, and they gave up Farnsworth...enough said on that.
Ponson was an emergency pick up to fill in in th e rotation. The Yankees do not go into rebuilding mode so early in the season. He won't be back, unless there are serious problems again and he is available. He has done a nice job for an emergency pick up. He is pretty consistant.

DanTheMan

Don't kid yourself, the games at the end of this month have the potential to be as exciting as any Octobah baseball. I like when the Yanks beat the Sox in Octobah too.

i say bring him back, there are many many reason that the team failed this season, and its not 100% on him, its about 50-50... but we do need someone who knows the owners, and the team.. right now that is him..

Allstarz - what is the view like from your soapbox?

September 3, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Let's look at the other side of this equation...

Who else would want to work for the inept and dysfunctional Steinbrenner brothers?

2008- THE YEAR THE YANKEES MISSED NOT ONLY THE AL EAST TITLE....

BUT THE WILD CARD AS WELL!!!!.....

A-Rod, by far, the BEST PLAYER YOU NEVER WANT TO HAVE ON YOUR TEAM!!!!!

Ok, I'm ready now fo the rest of the day...that was pretty cathartic...
