It's premature, but some people think that if the Wild are unable to sign star Marian Gaborik soon, he could be traded to the New York Rangers.

What a detailed story. T&R strikes again. I would imagine if they can't sign him, there are a plethora of teams he COULD be traded to.

Whenever a european is rumored to move, the Rangers are the first landing spot. Rangers are the home for wayward europeans and Sather is always willing to gamble on one. I for one would love to see Gaborik come to NY. However, I would not give up any signifgant talent to get him given his injury history.

Shortest premature story ever... slow day

From one defensive-minded team to another... this guy can't win.

September 3, 2008  09:15 AM ET

He'd look really good alongside Crosby, but Minnesota will want way too much for him. Whatever team gets him will pay a hefty price.

September 3, 2008  09:18 AM ET

He'd look really good playing with an indian head on his sweater.Tallon should get crackin' at his agent.

Are You serious..Thes guys good but the Rangers need veteran Leadership..Concentrate on gettting Shanny back..They Shouldnt blow it on him like they did on Jagr.. Now we have to look for a new captain all over again! Get Gaborik but bring back Shanahan!..He Can Still play and score! and give him the "C"

The Leafs will be all over trying to sign this guy if he's up for grabs!
They better be. He is exactly what they covet. But there will be a several other GM's lining up also. I don't think he will stay with the Wild much longer personally.

September 3, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Look at the interest from fans of various teams just on this site. What do you think the GM's will be doing when he hits the market?

September 3, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Time for my obligatory "he'd look good in Deadmonton" comment.

A fast team leaning to offense would suit him. And they need a gunner.

September 3, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Rangers will sign Matts in December...

September 3, 2008  10:30 AM ET

I do agree he will leave and tyes.. the Leafs should make a serious BIG offer.. he is exactly what they need.

September 3, 2008  10:31 AM ET

yes

September 3, 2008  10:58 AM ET

the leafs? why would he wanna go to the worst team in the nhl. i'm sure glen sather will be able to fgure out a way to get gaby on broadway and i hope he does

September 3, 2008  11:04 AM ET

He'd be a great pick up for the Rangers. Will he be enough to make a difference in the playoffs? Only if he manages to stay healthy!

September 3, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Hmmm... This story is incomplete. They left out the facts that Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Hobey Baker, Guy Lafleur, Maurice Richard, Boom-Boom Geoffrion, Patrick Roy, Ken Dryden, Steve Yzerman, and Toe Blake are also all headed to the Rangers.

September 3, 2008  11:44 AM ET

If he were traded to the Rangers what do they have that MN would want?? All the players on the Rangers are over 35 years old

September 3, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Really? One sentence?

I agree that the Leafs will make an offer, probably a good one too. While he could definitely be an impact player and probably help the Leafs make the playoffs for the first time since '04 I believe (correct me if I'm wrong with that one Baun), but I highly doubt he'll end up there. The Rangers have the need for an offensive player to help their young guns develop, and while Gaborik isn't exactly a seasoned veteran yet, he is at least more offensively talented than some of the other choices they have out there on the market.

While I'd love to see Shanny back for a leadership role as the team is pretty young, I don't see that happening. Too much money for a player on the last leg of his career.

September 3, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Smitty - not including goaltenders there are only 4 players that are 30 or over on the roster. Naslund (35), Drury (32), Redden (31), and Rozsival (30). Everyone else is in their early-mid twenties.

The Rangers couldnt fit Sundin in under the cap- where are they putting this guy?
