Red Wings close to signings

Darren McCarty said he expects to sign by Sept. 20, when camp begins. McCarty's decision basically, is whether he wants to sign a two-way deal (for one year at the NHL minimum) with the Wings, or decide if he's better off signing a contract with a minor-league team and then hope to be called up. McCarty said the issue comes down to money - he can make more signing a minor-league contract than what he would make if he was signed to a two-way NHL contract, and then sent to the minors. General manager Ken Holland said the contract will remain on the table for McCarty to sign until camp opens. The Wings expect to sign defenseman Kyle Quincey to a two-year deal, and Holland expects to get Chris Chelios signed to a one-year deal next week.

My... McCarty sure is a greedy little **** isn't he. The Wings made him who he is until he messed it all up, they bring him back from the NHL graveyard and he wins another cupwith Detroit... his 4th cup with the Wings, and he is going to bicker about a little more cash... ungrateful *&^%&^!!!!!

As far a D-Mac goes I would like to see him back but he doesn't bring a lot to the team. It's always about money so I understand where he is coming from. At the same time the Wings have been good to him so he needs to give a little and work hard to maintain his career.

I like the idea of Cheli coming back. He has a great work ethic and can give some added leadership. With Lidstrom, Chelios, Stuart, and Rafalski at defense you get some great experience.

September 3, 2008  09:15 AM ET

I'm still want Cheli to finish his epic career in Chi-town.

September 3, 2008  09:35 AM ET

D-Mac is really a non-issue. He got back, had some fun...needs to think of his limited playing future. I don't really see this a typical Greed NHLer move.
He's not exactly rolling in dough.
Chelios, the odds are this will be his final year. The Wings have the parts to give him enough ice time without putting the brunt of the D on his shoulders.
I think he will sign with them and go for one more Stanley. He should, if he is the least bit concerned with his health. Detroit's team makes Chris more effective with his current game.

September 3, 2008  09:53 AM ET

D-Mac's debt consolidator says he needs to make more money. He really shouldn't have put that half lion, half zebra on his credit card.

Sorry "I" in Team, to me it appears this may be a transition year for Cheli, giving him some ice time but not too much to wear him down, and this year will eventually transition into an assistant coach, exec position or something else within the Wings org. I mean, who else do you think can motivate his kid better than Chris? Then again, Scotty is running some things in Chi-town now...

I grew up idolizing Cheli when he was a Hawk. I was number 7 on all my hockey teams from little league to H.S. to men's league.when he became a Wing it drove a stake through me....one can dream though.

September 3, 2008  10:18 AM ET

When Chelios became a Hawk it drove a stake through my feelings for the Habs.

No matter where he plays I will always be a Chelios fan.

Has anybody ever seen on YouTube if they have a clip of Ron Hextall (ex Flyers goalie) chasing him trying to clobber him when Chelios was a Hab? That was such a great moment in hockey history it has to be around somewhere?

Can't get Baun-ded's to run. <---thats what she said...

September 3, 2008  11:31 AM ET

He should sign a contract to play in the KHL. While he's at it, he should take Todd Bertuzzi with him.

September 3, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Greedy, ungreatful ****. The Wings handed you the cup as a gift last year and your going to whine about a few thousand bucks. Grow up and learn how to manage your money.

September 3, 2008  12:30 PM ET

They didn't hand D-Mac a cup. (I don't think he even gets his name on it this year.) He didn't really contribute that much to the cup win. Detroit handed him a second chance. If someone does charity expecting something in return, that's not actually charity. Unless he really did a lot of work to get his speed up, McCarty is going to have a hard time of it. Perhaps he knows this and realizes he'd be better off signing that minor league contract, where he'll be able to contribute more to the team he's on than he did for the Wings.

THE GUY NEEDS THE MONEY...END OF STORY!!

September 3, 2008  03:24 PM ET

Chelios...850...signed..a bargain for the wings.

September 3, 2008  03:41 PM ET

Chelios did sign with the Wings? I wasnt real sure what he was going to do. After his quote from a week or so ago I though he might go to Chi-town.
