Giving Sakic time pays off

Joe Sakic remained the consummate team player at a Tuesday news conference while describing his decision to return to the Avalanche for at least another season. After determining during a summer grace period that he was physically and mentally ready for his 20th season in the NHL, Sakic based his decision on what he could do for the team, not what the team could do for him. "As a hockey player you want to win, but it's how you jell as a team," said Sakic, who has been the team captain since the 1992-93 season. "We had a lot of injuries last year and we never could get the cohesiveness and team chemistry going." Sakic said the time he was given to make a decision was a key factor.

Certain players for certain franchises have earned the right to have a "grace period" and Sakic is definately one of them. Great player and a classy guy.

Is Sundin in that class then Pens?

Considering that he has fielded offers from other teams and is not only deciding on whether to retire or play for the franchise he's always played for...no, he's not. What he's doing does not qualify as a "grace period."

AAAAHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG!
Joe's a Canadian!
Please...not even in the same breath can you mention these two!

September 3, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Dunno what being canadian has to do with "grace period"....

September 3, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Joe's was a grace period...Sundin's is a vow of silence.
The AAHHRRGG...was for mentioning the two together...
Mats will never be able to hold Sakic's cup.
Joe's canadian. I'm just putting that out there.
Why...because the Canadian Hockey player has a completely different mentality to the sport of Hockey than any other Nationality.
In other news...the McCabe deal if final and he is a Panther and Van Ryn is a Leaf. The Leafs save 2 million per seasnon and gave up a 4th rounder in 2010.

I'm just as tired of the Sundin saga as the next person here but I'd still take him on my team should he decide he wanted to play again. Canuck or not.

September 3, 2008  10:21 AM ET

McCabe trade will haunt for years..

September 3, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Can't wait 'til October 9, baby! Sakic and Stastny will light up the Bruins at Pepsi Center. That's right, bostongm... I said it. Do something.

September 3, 2008  12:00 PM ET

Sakic has shown nothing but class through out his grace period. Sundin on the other hand just seems to be playing everyone along till he feels like making a decision. There is no comparison between the two.

September 3, 2008  12:26 PM ET

Joe is class personified.
So glad he's playing another year.

September 3, 2008  01:17 PM ET

4-1? Please. You want a bet, you got it. Stastny will get a hat trick, and Salei and Foote will make Boston's forwards cry like Todd Bertuzzi did in his "apology" press conference.

September 3, 2008  02:03 PM ET

Is that Stastny's or Chara's drool bostongm?

September 3, 2008  03:06 PM ET

Nice.

September 3, 2008  10:10 PM ET

Ruslan Salei will knock Chara out with a crushing hip-check. He will then summon his KGB buddies from Russia to carry Chara off and make sure that he is never seen again.

September 4, 2008  01:47 AM ET

I think this is the first time I've seen 'jell' spelled like that.

Foote?? hahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
