GM: Jays won't spend much in '09

While Toronto's division rivals prepare for free-agent spending sprees, Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi is planning a quiet off-season of internal re-arming. "I don't really know how much we're going to look to spend," Ricciardi said over the weekend at Yankee Stadium. "I mean, we'll do some things. But we'll probably be more judicious in how we do it." By contrast, the flailing Yankees are warming their charge cards in advance of a frontal assault on the best available talent. Names dangling for them include Milwaukee starter CC Sabathia, Angels slugger Mark Teixeira and the Jays' own A.J. Burnett. "They're always going to do things that we can't do," Ricciardi said of the Yanks.

It sin't Ricciardi's fault. He is told by those in the suits what he can spend. It is Ted Rogers, Mr. Cable Guy (a billionnaire) who refuses to spend large, much like other felow billionnaire owners, who hoard gate receipts or fail to take chances to win a championship. Ricciardi has not done a bang-up job in Toronto, and deserves criticism for many moves, or non-moves. However, the salary cap in Toronto is not his doing.

So the Jays could suck just as bad next year and spend less money?

September 3, 2008  10:07 PM ET

I believe J.P. Ricciardi is in the twilight of a mediocre career !!!

September 3, 2008  11:42 PM ET

You do realize their payroll is like $100 mill?

September 4, 2008  01:28 AM ET

I'm planning a quiet off-season too, and I will be wearing nicer sunglasses than J.P.

To second HMan's comment... the freakin' payroll is $100 mil.... how can you say it's Rogers tight purse strings that have put them in this situation?!?!

Ummmmm...he won't even be around next year to even worry about the roster or the payroll.....wishful thinking on his part perhaps
