Rangers have an unhappy catcher

The Texas Rangers have three catchers on the roster. One's future is on hold with a season-ending injury, and another figures his might be with another team. At the moment, only the catcher of the future is genuinely excited about his Rangers future. Rookie Taylor Teagarden, who found out Tuesday he'll split time with Gerald Laird for the rest of the season, is ecstatic about the opportunity. That prospect is unsettling for Laird, who believes he's proven himself worthy of full-time employment. "They have to decide this off-season," Laird said. "I'm kind of tired of this stuff. If they're going to go with one of them, then give me a chance to go somewhere else." Laird said he would love to stay with the Rangers but not at the expense of looking over his shoulder all the time at the possibility of a young prospect taking his job.

Wow, a story about the Texas Rangers......I thought they noved to Washington and became the Nationals a few years back.

Another guy monitoring the long term catching situation in Boston....

Hey Laird they could have moved you to the Marlins, but they got to gretty and asked for Volstad??? Should have asked for someone like Cody Ross or Jeremy Hermida

September 3, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Maybe he should actually play a little better and he won't have to keep looking over his shoulder...it's that simple, if you can hit and field, you will be in the lineup.

Salty and Laird are winter trade bait. Line up, teams without a decent catcher. But don't expect the Rangers to just give these guys away. Come up with a decent offer or go lick a toad.

Lick a toad!!!! ha!!!!! I agree they are gonna be trade bait.BUT TO WHO???

September 3, 2008  10:27 AM ET

every team needs at least 2 catchers.. you can't have one alone. GROW UP

Classic. I also agree with AFScott in that if he weren't some flotsam and jetsom that blew in from some backwater berg and actually played well enough to merit the role of starter and put any notion of impeding him from playing out of the coaches minds this would be a non-issue. NYY25to13 is correct too as EVERY team needs two catchers.

Rumor has it that after 5 purchases at Sonic, when can obtain an MLB franchise via mail in rebate. How else to explain Drayton McClane, Pete Angelos, and whoever owns the Rangas

September 3, 2008  02:38 PM ET

Peace out Gerald Laird!

September 3, 2008  06:25 PM ET

Start hitting like you belong and then they'll stop trying to replace you. I still think Daniels would do well (he'd do well er better if he got the boot cause he sucks!) to trade Saltamacchia.

September 3, 2008  09:59 PM ET

First of all if you are a Texas Ranger - you have proven sheet !!! Secondly you should be ashamed to be sharing catching duties with a guy named "Taylor Teagarden" !!!
