Al Michaels and John Madden, who will call the National Football League's season-opening telecast tonight, haven't quite got used to seeing Brett Favre in a New York Jets uniform. Madden, moreover, can't understand why the Packers could not have worked out something to keep Favre in Green Bay. The NBC announcers made their comments in a phone interview Wednesday from New York where they getting ready to call the Washington Redskins at New York Giants telecast. Madden said he was surprised by the whole episode and is still scratching his head about Favre's departure from Green Bay. "I was really surprised the way this whole thing came down," Madden said. "I was surprised first of all when he retired. He always told me that as long as he was healthy and he had a chance to win, he'd keep playing. Obviously he was healthy and they were in the championship game, so they had a good team. I was more surprised when he retired than I was when he said he wanted to come back, because I never thought he'd retire," Madden said. "Then I was also surprised that they couldn't work something out there in Green Bay."

I'm puzzled why he'd join the jets and not someone else that has a legimate shot of at least a deep playoff run

"Because I'm Brett Favre, that's why. I have a superbowl ring, that's why. Now move away from me so the press can photograph me some more! Geez!"

John, do you mean to tell me your boy Favre didn't run ANY of this past you first??? I find it hard to believe that he would've snubbed you like that.

September 4, 2008  09:36 AM ET

With all due respects to Madden, this was Favres doing or undoing
with Green Bay its that simple, since Brett wasnt going to be a Viking
un till all hell freeze over, Tampa or the Jets were the only options,
and the Jets deal took 48 hours for Favre to decide.
We'll see just how long Brett enjoys NY.

I agree but I think Whistler has it part right. I agree that GB wouldn't have let Favre go to the Vikings. However, I don't agree to lay all the blame on Favre. You have a team that said, "Come back and ride the pine while we try our new boy out." Next they said, "We will let you compete for the starting position that you gave up for one off season" which I don't believe they would have started Favre anyway but they would have been in a BAD situation had the Packers started losing and fans started chanting, "FAVRE FAVRE FAVRE". The only solution for the Packers was really to let Favre come back and start. Anything else was going to be ugly just as seeing him play for the Jets is ugly for a Hall of Fame QB who spent every year on one team to finish with another team. Oh well.. what is done is done. I hope Favre does well but I have my doubts. He has always been hit and miss. There will be days when he throws 3 or 4 ints. It's Favre.. love it or hate it.

John Madden.... can't understand why the Packers could not have worked out something to keep Favre in Green Bay.

Maybe it's because they didn't want to? Maybe they got sick of his act? Maybe they got tired of catering to that diva?

antonio and TheDude are right. The reason nothing was worked out is because of another huge ego - Ted Thompson. He's convinced that somehow, somebody elected him to 'owner' of the Packers. He started off negotiations with Favre by accusing him of talking to the Vikings. The NFL investigation said different.

Thompson and McLardy have shown their ignorance on more than one occasion. Boys, you should have asked the true owner of the Packers what they wanted to do about Favre. I don't think the citizens of Green Bay want the Packers to become the 49ers by trading off their icons because their old.

McLardy was asked about a player injury that occurred during the Packer/Niner preseason game. McLardy said he didn't see that play! What the heck! He must have been too busy wolfing down a snickers bar at the time.

Well, I'm glad its time for the talk to end and the season to start. We'll see who can put up or shut up, but I'm betting there will be some management changes in Green Bay within the next year.

September 4, 2008  12:46 PM ET

I have been a Packer fan since I was born and I can tell you even I am sick of hearing about Favre again and again. When he was a Packer, I adored him as much as any Packer fan would and even now I wish him nothing but good luck in his new job at the NY Jets. But enough is enough - Favre has had a reputation for many years of waffling on retirement and Green Bay fans (like myself) have had to go through agonizing day by day hoping he would come back - thankfully he kept coming back and after being only one game away from the Super Bowl last year, I was sure he would come back for one more especially with the solid talent around him in Green Bay. Imagine my deep disappointment when he announced his retirement in March 08. I am no fan of Ted Thompson but even management must look out for what is best for the team and I belive Favre only has himself to blame. Favre is not a diva but I truly think he believed the Packers would welcome him back with open arms. I am not suprised they didn't but was hoping they would. Now, we have the Aaron Rodgers era and I will probably be one of the first to criticize the Packers if they go 0-2 or 0-3. Let's move on folks!

Looks like Madden will be playing:

YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVING FEELING (The Righteous Brothers)

You never close your eyes any more
When I kiss your lips
And there's no tenderness like before
In your fingertips
You're trying hard not to show it baby
But baby, baby I know it

You've lost that loving feeling
Oh, that loving feeling
You've lost that loving feeling
Now it's gone, gone, gone
Whoa-oh

Green Bay will regret this one...

Favre is a true playmaker!!!
