Is K-Rod a fit for Tigers in '09?

The Angels' Francisco Rodriguez is closing in on the single-season record for saves. In November, he's due to become a free agent. Considering all the high-spending teams who don't have an established closer -- and that includes the Tigers -- there's no telling how high and frantic the bidding for Rodriguez might get. Yet what his bidders might find most exciting about Rodriguez is that he's making more and more use of the change-up. That pitch could allow him to remain effective for the life of any long-term contract. He won't get burned out regularly throwing a change-up the way he might if he relied heavily on the fastball.

No he's not going anywhere. I am sure he likes outhern California. I know I would.

I thought K Rod threw a lot of sliders..... maybe the author didn't realize that.... anyways, the guy would fit in on any team. Closers like him are rare.

September 4, 2008  07:45 AM ET

Angels will not let this guy go unless he wants ARod money.. He makes an immediate impact anywhere. One of the best.

September 4, 2008  07:50 AM ET

I bet he goes to Texas.

September 4, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Detroit needs him desperately. We've proven to not be able to keep our "closers of the future" healthy and accurate.

FIRST, Detroit needs to fire Chuck. He's ruined enough pitchers already...

I like the idea of K-Rod coming to the Tigers...but it will never happen. The asking price will be to high and the race to land him fierce.

September 4, 2008  08:22 AM ET

Detroit needs to dump too much salary to be able to afford their next batch of free agents.

September 4, 2008  08:52 AM ET

The race to land K-Rod would not be as fierce as you would think. The top three spenders, Yanks, Red Sox, and Mets, won't be looking for a closer. Other contending teams won't either, Twins, White Sox, and Phils. The only teams that would go after him would be either Detroit or the Brews (along with the Angles). The bigger demand will be for C.C, everyone is going to want him.

September 4, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I agree CC will be the top pick but KRod will have huge offers. Teams like Atlanta who is struggling with all pitching levels may show up for this one. I really think he will still be with the Angels next year.

Mariano's contract is going to net this guy alot of bucks. think he gets in the neighborhood of $15 mil? $10mil?, that would be per yerar.

September 4, 2008  09:42 AM ET

why would he want to go to a team that doesn't need a closer since they usually aren't in the position to use a closer

September 4, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Well, NYY25to13, your Yanks will be watching the playoffs this year too, just like the Tigers, and you have the best closer.
In baseball, you just never know.....

First time he does that Eric Gagne fist pump in Detroit some out of work auto worker will gut him like a walleye

Hope he has enough arm after all that motion, twisting, kicking. and total saves. 57? Not hard for him to reach. He's going to get $ 15 mil a year. What a country!!!

Contrary to many of the above posters, but I believe that the R-Sox could make a "mad push" for K-Rod, b/c Papelbon has wanted out of the closer role for a few yrs & what would Boston look like w/ a healthy Beckett, Dice K, Papelbon, Jon Lester, C. Buchholz (w/another yr of exp.), & maybe another yr of the innings eater Tim Wakefield. Then if they got K-Rod they would probably only need say one more bullpen arm & they would be set for some yrs.
