Auburn, 'Bama chasing recruit
Demond Dennis of Carver, Atlanta was thrilled to learn earlier this year that he had received scholarship offers from SEC powerhouses Alabama and Auburn. But the euphoria subsided just a bit once he read the fine print. "I was excited when I first got [the offers], but now they both want me to switch over to defensive back," the 5-foot-10, 193-pound senior said. "I want to play running back." Dennis also holds offers from East Carolina, Illinois, Louisville, Western Kentucky and UAB. He is being recruited by each of those programs as a running back.

Well if he wants to play running back then I would assume that both Bama and Auburn would be out of the equation.
The kid should go to East Carolina. Assuming Skip Holtz is around next season of course, because if he has a good year this year I can see a school making a run for him in the off-season.

So it's all about what HE wants? Fine, go play for a second rate, non-SEC team. If he were a running back the caliber of Bama's freshman Ingram or Ben Tate, both schools would consider him as a RB recruit. Obvioulsy he isn't. These are the kind of kids we don't need in the Auburn program -- ones who feel they are so good they can dictate where they fit into the program. If he had any sense, he's be tickled to be considered by coaches Saban and Tubberville. Instead, he's disappointed that he can't have it his way. He needs to take a lesson from current Auburn players who have switched positions to better the team when the need arose. Screw him. Let Bama have him. We don't need the attitude.

Maybe T Bowden will call Saban and ask him if he should recruit this kid for Clemson....

Since when does the player not have a say on where he thinks he can play? If both Bama and Auburn are recruiting him to play on the defensive side of the ball, then he has a decision to make. East Carolina, Louisville, Illinois and UAB are all fine institutions of higher learning. How about we let the recruit decide where he thinks he will fit in best. Allow me to give you an example you might weigh into your decision. There was a great running back up here in Connecticut that owned every title and accolade possible in the state. He was being recruited by top 25 institutions to include SEC schools as a defensive back but he only wanted to play the running back position, he chose a lesser school that recruited him as a running back. This player never started a game at the running back position in his collegiate career. In his Senior year at this university he asked to be looked at the defensive back position, not only did he earn the starting position but that year he became a first round draft pick by the New England Patriots. Isn't it ironic that all those top 25 institutions to include SEC teams that were recruiting him to play defensive back, turned out to know what they were doing? My point, sometimes we know what our heart is telling us and we don't listen to men and women who know better. I think the honorable Coach Saban and Tubberville have a ton of experience that as a recruit you can count on, trust them. The player's name that I wrote about was Tebucky Jones, Syracuse University, first round draft pick of the New England Patriots and a graduate with a degree in Education.

Pathfinder...you sound like a fool. If the guy is a RB and wants to play RB...and he has offers from schools that will let him play RB....why would he go to Auburn just to play out of position? And you are saying the guy has an attitude..just because he wants to play RB?

Both of these teams are giving him a great opportunity to play for their team. He needs to hop on that. Why settle for a lesser football team just to play the position you want. He needs to suck it up and go play some DB for Auburn.

It is naive these days to think that many blue chippers would rate playing for a storied program above what they thnk would be their best shot of getting to the riches of the professional level. Whether this kid has the talent to play running back or not isn't the point. He THINKS he does (or somebody in his inner circle is telling him he does) and he apparently will be basing his college decision on that belief.

Agreed, TenRings, your college football prowess matches your baseball knowledge. In addition, he'll receive the best education out of those schools and have a broader base of contacts to utilize if he doesn't go to the big show and has to get a real job.

Gariboy, now let's just think about what you said "it is naive these days to think many blue chippers would rate playing for a storied program above what they thnk would be their best shot of getting to the riches of the professional level." -- Now I am all for the kid doing whatever he wants, but do you truly think "riches" and the "professional level" are in this kids future at RB when two of the best talent evaluators (Saban and Tubberville) don't even think the kid has enough skill at the position to compete (not start) for their schools? - Once again though go follow your heart kid, and enjoy playing games with Western Kentucky or UAB, we'll probably do just fine without you at Bama.

If he has his mind set on playing RB , go play RB. For Gods sake though don't go to UAB.

On the flip side of that coin though, there was a QB out of Athens, AL that Auburn tried to recruit as a defense back, he turned them down to go play QB at NC State. His name would be Philip Rivers and how is that working out for him?

Also Pat White was recruited by both Alabama and Auburn to play DB and I think he is doing fairly well at WVU playing QB.

BamaFan...My point is not whether the kid does or does not HAVE the talent at RB. He THINKS he does and that appears to be more important to him than playing at Auburn or Alabama. If it was me, I'd listen to Saban and Tubberville but who knows who has this kids ear...?

It's funny that the Bama and Auburn fans think this kid is being selfish for wanting to play running back.
Last time I checked it's the kid's decision on where he wants to go to school and the position he wants to play. If he think's he's a running back and other schools think he's a running back then he's going to go to one of those schools.

No one gives a crap about the kid. Its all about Alabama & Auburn. The kid's not even from their state, why should he care about them.
