Wagner closer to Mets return

The Mets said they got good news on the Billy Wagner front yesterday when their veteran closer threw 20 pitches without incident off the mound at Shea Stadium. Wagner, sidelined since early August by a swollen left elbow and strained left forearm, plans another bullpen session of about the same number of pitches tomorrow. He then is expected to make a minor-league rehab appearance Saturday or Sunday with Class-A Brooklyn. If Wagner continues to pitch without pain, he could rejoin the Mets in the next two weeks.

Bring em on! I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl about this series........uh I mean I'm quite looking forward to it.

Question: What is Wagner gonna throw next? And after that? And after that?
Answer: Fastball, fastball, and another fastball.

As soon as his velocity drops 5 mph, he'll be tossing BP in the 9th instead of lights out. This guy is way overrated.

Spoken like a true "baseball purist", I like competition and the merry banter of my team's opponent's fans, kudos sir.........I'd wish you luck but I want to see the Phils in the postseason.

Oh and nice schoolgirl reference............my daughter started attending kindergarten on Tuesday, so I know what you mean. ;-)

September 4, 2008  05:09 PM ET

They may have to play two on Sunday.....Hanna is supposed to hit the NY Metro area on Saturday.....and good luck to you Chasin (but not to your team!)

YOU SAW them in the playoffs LAST year, remember? Maybe you blinked, my bad.

Somehow I don't think Don Zimmer could fit in Mr. Wagner's mouth - NO SOUP AGAIN !!! Sincerely, Bill "Spaceman" Lee

This is completely random, but I was wondering..

1999 24 STL NL 149 537 104 160 31 2 34 107 21 9 82 128 .298 .404 .553 139 297 0 4 4 16 11

In 149 games in 1999, Fernando Tatis (24) had a .298 BA, .404 OBP, 34 HR, and 107 RBI. That's an unbelievable season. What happened to him?

September 5, 2008  08:17 AM ET

A lot of players hit a ton of home runs in the 90s and early 00s......like Bonds, Sosa, McGuire. Then, after drug testing started, a lot of players couldn't hit a lot of home runs anymore. It's one of the great mysteries of baseball.

September 5, 2008  12:59 PM ET

That b4st4rd took steroids!

September 5, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Jason, don't jump to conclusions.......it shall remain one of baseball's great mysteries (like the one which asks 'how did Brady Anderson hit so many home runs before drug testing?'
