Mets VP: Randolph had to go

The subject of Willie Randolph was raised indirectly, although not incidentally, here Wednesday by Mets VP Tony Bernazard. He was touting Carlos Delgado as a legitimate MVP candidate, ticking off the usual reasons - mechanics, confidence - for his stunning resurgence, when he offered this telling tidbit: "The other thing," said Bernazard, "is that maybe it has something to do with the new people running the team." He didn't refer specifically to either Randolph or Jerry Manuel, but with that one sentence, Bernazard may as well have declared: "See? We were right." Bernazard still won't say so publicly, but it's clear in conversation with him about the state of the ballclub that he felt Randolph had to go, perhaps felt more strongly about the need for a change than anyone in the organization.

Delgado is doing better because of a manager change?? .... was Randolph standing behind him holding his bat or something?.... please.....what a stupid comment.....

September 4, 2008  07:49 AM ET

Stupid comment and news.. Why are they still bringing this up? Guess they still feel like they need to justify something?!

September 4, 2008  07:51 AM ET

Jerry Manuel is not the man... Trust me... As a Sox Sider, I would know.

September 4, 2008  08:52 AM ET

who cares. Unless the Phils take at least 2 of 3 this weekend, this division is over.

September 4, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Blame iot on the fall guy. Randolph's firing was to cover Minaya's but, Minaya was next in line, fortunately for him the team picked it up.

September 4, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Manuel cant control big egos, ask him about Frank Thomas

September 4, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Sure he did, this is nothing ground breaking. Should have happened last year dumbass!

This is so stupid. Bernazard is a moron anyway, who spent too much time undermining Randolph regardless. And Delgado is back because of Manuel? Oh - I get it. He would risk jeopardizing his livelihood because he doesn't like Willie. Right.

Sox Sider: Um, how many people were able to manage Frank Thomas anyway? Bad example.

Because as offensive as many comments may be we trust that the majority are made tongue in cheek and most of us don't believe in censorship. If it bothers you report it.
While i disagree with the tone and substance of the comment I do not think it was meant seriously.

Hey Allstarz, already reported...and it's disgusting that there are still people in the U S that still think this way. That is not free speech...it is hatred and bigotry.

Chicken is right.

The exact kind that would never say such things in front of anyone.
Get em off of here!

I can't say for sure-
but there is no doubt that the veterans were not giving it their all
when willie was manager. And veterans know- when something is expected of your team & you aren't living up to expectations + high payroll.....it is easy to get a manager fired
No one wants to get up to bat and strike out.......obviously-
but a dive here, sac fly there, busting it down the line.....
that stuff is contagious and important, which as a whole (most) players were simply no doing for willie.

I agree completely, this stuff is like the filth that the reverend Wright spewed out ad infinitum at his alleged Christian church. Whack 'em both......oh, and vote for McCain.

September 4, 2008  01:14 PM ET

Maybe Randolph did need to go. For whatever reason the Mets had underperformed since last June. However, his firing did not have to be done in such a classless way. NY fans showed Randolph what they thought of him at the Yankee old timer's game. Or should I say NY Yankee fans.

September 4, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Only the mets can turn a nice run at the end to a "we could only have done this by firing Willie" statement. Clearly a classless organization. When will managements just shut up and let performance do their talking.

September 4, 2008  06:21 PM ET

Well said, Dr J
