A source says the Panthers have offered Julius Peppers a contract that would make him among the league's highest-paid defensive players.

Guess they were impressed in the pre-season. I think SI is wrong to forecast this team at 9-7, give them at least 10-6. If Delhomme stays healthy I think the Panthers are going to be a big surpirse......Julius is back baby!

Have to admire the panther's owner. after the season peppers had last year, to put a huge contract on the table this season says 3 things. Panthers believe in Peppers. The owner stands behind what he says (see last season). And the Panthers might be frivolous spenders.

September 4, 2008  07:10 AM ET

Nah - not big spenders - they never go after the big free agents

September 4, 2008  07:30 AM ET

not sure why the panthers would offer him more than the market would pay. after his off season in 07, they could get more of a deal than making peppers one of the top played defensive players in the nfl.

says a lot of what the panthers think about peppers though. to make the strong offer and ignore last season.

Good move as Julius is the man! Take it Julius as you

jackman....(Sophia) | 09/04/08, 07:00 AM

hasn't this been the issue the last couple of years?

September 4, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Hey, I am an optimist until a few games into the season....hahaha

September 4, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Peppers will rebound, he is a BEAST

September 4, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Test the FA market Peppers. You might actually get a contract offer from a contender.

Dr D......the Panthers have a good shot at winning their division which means playoffs. Did you hope all the Giants players jumped ship last year for the same reason.

(Get this season started already!)

September 4, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Peppers has the talent to be a top DE in the league for many years. I think last year was a fluke. And he's still only 28.

September 4, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I think he is a good player, shame he plays for the panthers

September 4, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Biggied....shame your a boys fan as you stink from here in NC

Dr D....why would he test FA when he went to UNC, grew up in
NC, and loves NC? Your a DA...millions are millions and for a few
more it shows you Julius has class....or will when he signs!

September 4, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Bravo Eyes..........Charlotte gets no respect. Damn I wish they won that SB. At least we got a little nipple at half time.

September 4, 2008  11:37 AM ET

as well they should

September 4, 2008  01:02 PM ET

I live in NC, and am NOT a Panthers fan.. I want to be, but I just can't get behind until they get rid of Jake Delhomme. That guy is the worst! When he is on, he is on... but he is way too sometimey...and as soon as things start to look ruff, he some how comes up with an injury and has to leave the game. The Panthers need to go get Culpepper at QB or somebody... Hell anybody as far as that is concerned.

Dont DO IT!

julius peppers is good. Not as good as Jason Taylor still, but better than Dwight Spinmove Freeney.
