Andruw Jones writes off season

With the Dodgers' outfield set, the regular season winding down and his knee swollen again, Andruw Jones said he had already started looking forward to next year. "This year," Jones said, "it's basically over." Jones, who is hitting .161 with three home runs and 14 runs batted in in 74 games, was activated from the disabled list Monday, the day major league teams could expand their rosters. But he is still bothered by his surgically repaired knee, which he reinjured while on a rehab assignment in Las Vegas. Jones scaled back his workouts this week and admitted he doesn't think he can make much of a contribution this season, not with only 23 games left and Manager Joe Torre settled on an outfield of Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier.

Take Manny of 5 years ago, Druw of 2 years ago and Kemp of 2 years from now and you got a pretty darn good outfield.

It appears that Andruw is on the same diet/exercise program as CC.

I realize that he was already pretty bad last year, but is this the most precipitous fall we have seen of a star in the past 15 years or so?

what he really needs to write off is about 50 pounds

September 4, 2008  12:05 PM ET

there ought to be a breach of contract clause that can be invoked in situations like this....think he would have reinjured his knee if his weight was under control? why should the dodgers be on the hook for that? it's not like me showing up overweight to my desk job. hell, if i weighed more maybe i'd stay in my seat and get some work done.

"Hey Boo Boo. What Do You Think Is in That Pic-a-nic Basket?"

Dreifort/Schmidt/Jones the worst signings in Dodger history... Even Kevin Brown had a good season or two.

How ignorant you are to insult a player who is pitching so well. CC is pitching lights out.

I thought he was dead or retired. tsk tsk

September 4, 2008  09:21 PM ET

I wish he had "written the yearoff" at the beginning of the season and maybe the Dodgers would be a few games ahead of the "Backs' instead of a few behind.

Whatta disappointment!!!

September 4, 2008  09:49 PM ET

I thought he wrote off this season back in April.

September 4, 2008  10:10 PM ET
