Sundin: Start season without me

NHL camps open in two weeks, but Mats Sundin still is pondering his hockey future. The former Maple Leafs captain, who became an unrestricted free agent in July, does not expect to make a decision anytime soon. "I will not make up my mind before the season starts," Sundin told a news conference yesterday. "That's how I feel right now. Others have started playing in the middle of the season. If I would feel like retiring, I would say it." The 37-year-old Sundin is working out and says he is in good shape. "I skated yesterday and it was a lot of fun," he said. "I love to play hockey. I've played since I was five, but the question is if I can play at the highest level again."

Gladly, F&%$Ck you T&R

September 4, 2008  07:34 AM ET

Blah, blah, **** blah.

September 4, 2008  07:44 AM ET

Thank you Mats for permission to move on without you you arrogant ****hole.

September 4, 2008  07:47 AM ET

Start and move on.. what does he think.. the team is holding their breathe and hoping he comes back??? Please

September 4, 2008  08:22 AM ET

This guy is becoming a larger **** by the day. The Leafs need to move on w/o Mats. He can figure out if he is going to retire or if he wants to play elsewhere on his own time. This type of player mentality hurts potential new teams development. They wait for him and miss out on another player ready to make up his mind.

I can sleep again....

No, wait a minute..

September 4, 2008  08:52 AM ET

The problem is some teams were actually holding their breathe waiting for his decision. But it is their problem, not his. Organizations should have never relied on a guy who whenever asked this question always stated clearly that he was still undecided.
If he feels he's ready for another year, he should be prepared to cash in less than he would if signed in the offseason. A potential employer has to be aware that Sundin's production might drop due to his inability to make up his mind. Plain and simple.

Really? Can we??? Thanks Mats!

Mats the pats....go hang out with Forsberg, will ya?

September 4, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Well we know he at least isn't waiting to see if the leafs are in the playoff hunt before he comes back.

September 4, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Seriously. Does anyone outside of a few diehards in Toronto and Sweden give a ****? I actually cared about whether on not Joe Sakic was coming back. Not this idiot.

September 4, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Mats may have been class in the past, but right now he's being a huge d*ck. I've made tougher, more complicated life decisions in less time.

He needs to get his **** together and stop being an emo child.

September 4, 2008  10:48 AM ET

joefordnproud >? why do hate T&R so much? jsut wondering.

Mats, Mats, Mats we love you, we love what you have done for the LEAFs we, love your leadership but heads up the world will continue to spin without you . If you can't make a decision of this magnitude in a timely and mature fashion its time to move on. Stay in Sweden, go fishing but for the time being stay out of Toronto.

September 4, 2008  10:52 AM ET

When exactly did Mats Sundin turn into Peter Forsberg?

September 4, 2008  11:00 AM ET

I think he's probably not the guy who is causing the kerfuffle.

He's probably sitting at home counting his kroner pondering whether he feels like playing again. He's not out seeking the press to tell them he hasn't made up his mind yet. It's 180 degrees the other way. I bet he can't go take a decent dump without having to chase away paparazzi.

He doesn't need $$ so big bucks aren't going to entice him. Having been a Leaf he knows disappointment so no need for more of the same. He's not going to want to play on the West Coast to avoid all the travel.

I think somewhere in the midst of this season some contender will find cap space and sign him for very little. And he will go. To try to win a cup.

September 4, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Come Mats it's time to make up your mind. Most of the fans quit caring long ago. We understand it's a tough decision but come on already. T&R and the rest of the media need to give these stories a rest. Leave him a;one and maybe he'll make up his god damn mind.

Sundin: Start season without me

What? Did he really expect the NHL to postpone the opening of the season until his royal diva-sness decides? Arrogant or what?

DCruiser

What was he supposed to say? I don't see it as arrogance.

September 4, 2008  11:13 AM ET

He's just saying go ahead it might take me abit longer. I don't really see any arrogance there either.

September 4, 2008  11:48 AM ET

He'll sign with the team he thinks has the best chance at the cup, that will still give him 20min of ice time a night, around say...November. That way he'll still be fresh come playoff time. He knows that this is probably his last shot at a cup and he really doesn't want to screw it up. And I agree Hank, I think the media has blown this whole thing up to a ridiculous level. I think most of the reason this was a much bigger story than Sakic or Selanne is that unlike those two Mats never said he'll only come back for one team, which fueled speculation of "Where's he gonna go..."
