Pot tied to Penn State players?

After a relatively quiet summer, Penn State football players once again find themselves mixed up with the law. Whether there are repercussions for coach Joe Paterno and his team remains to be seen. University police said they found and seized marijuana Tuesday from a campus apartment registered to four Nittany Lions players. The authorities still were investigating and did not release the names of the players they expect to file charges against, Lt. Bill Moerschbacher said. The search warrant listed junior tight end Andrew Quarless and junior cornerback A.J. Wallace as residents and among those present during the police search. Junior defensive end Maurice Evans and sophomore defensive tackle Abe Koroma also are registered as residents of the apartment, according to university online records, although the warrant did not say they were present. A team source said all four players did not practice yesterday. Police said they were called to the Nittany Apartments complex after 8 p.m. to follow up on a complaint of loud music coming from Apartment 5204. According to the report, "The odor of burning marijuana was detected coming from inside one of the buildings. The residents of the apartment denied a consent search, and a search warrant was applied for and executed on the residence. The search yielded a small amount of marijuana." When police entered, they were greeted by Aristides A. Nova, a student who told the officers that he was staying at the apartment temporarily, the warrant said.

Penn State football players in trouble? No way!

JoePa has to be going nuts over this! If these players are not kicked off the team, he should resign immediately.

You guys must not have gone to college? Either that or you didn't have much fun in college. It's not like the guys were selling the stuff. And yes back in your days football players were doing the EXACT same thing.. they just didn't have an internet to broadcast every little detail of everybody's life.

September 4, 2008  08:21 AM ET

Once again, the apologists will make excuses. What we did in college has no bearing on today or what these players are doing. And how do you know they weren't selling it? Athelets are held to a different standard b/c they have scholarships to the universities, They broke the law, plain and simple. Whether you agree with the law is irrelevant.

Very true bigdog, but those players have to know all eyes are on them at all times.

September 4, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Two things...........agree with bigdog, legalize it for gods sake. Alcohal is worse!

Joe needs to move on already.

September 4, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Bigdog is an idiot. Read his other posts. The Penn State football program is a train wreck. Since 2002 they have had more arrests and convictions than they have had wins. What was once a proud program is now a joke.

Point taken. Think it is time for Joe to move on already? He dosnt even seem to have a transition plan.

September 4, 2008  08:39 AM ET

He is tied with Bowden. I am not sure either one of those guys will retire before the other if they can help it.

September 4, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Bigdog - these guys are on full scholarships. They represent the school and are blessed with amazing opportunities. These players aren't bench warmers. There's no room for Tuesday night dope parties during football season.

September 4, 2008  08:48 AM ET

I seriously wonder how these guys can smoke and still run and have endurance...the two just dont go together well.

September 4, 2008  08:50 AM ET

Yeah! **** dopers. They should be practicing!

September 4, 2008  08:55 AM ET

This is a non-story. Call me when they actually do something wrong. Shocking, a very small amount of pot was found after police were called to break up a loud party. Give me a break. Gotta love the sports media, making something out of nothing.

Let's just wait until this plays out. There apparently were a bunch of people over at the apartment (only 2 football players were present) and who knows who the marijuana belonged to or who was smoking it. There's the possibility that the players weren't involved at all. I do agree, however, that after all the scrutiny that's been put on PSU football lately that these guys need to avoid situations like this at all costs.

King Football, aside from one major incident in 2006 (which obviously can't be condoned), I'd bet that PSU is on par with other major programs when it comes to run ins with the law. It's not like these guys are killing and robbing people. They're getting caught drinking underage, **** in public, or making prank phone calls (see Dan Connor). It's just because of the Outside the Lines report that PSU is in the spotlight.

September 4, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Sounds to me like the student body at PSU isn't too thrilled with the football team and are taking every opportunity to get them pinched.

Kem,

Why don't you do a little research before posting.

Since 2002, 46 players charged on 163 counts. Are you crazy?

Sexton is right. College does provide all types of temptations but these men should know that they are held to a different expectation then the rest of us.
