Lindros to skip Flyers' tribute

A stir was raised among Flyers fans when Eric Lindros turned down an invitation to return to the soon-to-be demolished Wachovia Spectrum for a ceremony at the team's preseason game against Carolina on Sept. 27. As part of a farewell tribute to the Spectrum, the Flyers have invited all their past captains to that game, including Lindros, who had a stormy relationship with the team. Yesterday, the club issued a statement from Lindros, who clarified why he won't be there with the other captains. "I'm unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony at the Spectrum because I will be attending a memorial service for my close friend's mother who recently passed away," he said. "The Spectrum holds many special memories for me, and I always enjoyed playing there in front of the great Flyers fans."

Yes Spiny, but the Flyer doctors will tell him there's nothing wrong with him as he's carted off in the ambulance.

Mom and dad must have told him it would be a bad idea.

Flyers fans will probably be pi$s*d off at the woman for dying.

I am far from a lindros fan but, come on, he has a funeral to go to

September 4, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Not surprised are we? Let's just say both sides (Clarke and Lindros) made huge mistakes during that stormy era. Clarke has never been subtle about what he thought about Lindros' parents, which I believe was most of the problem. Lindros, on the other hand, didn't avoid controversy, demanding a trade (a recurring theme in his career) when things got dicey.

I gained some respect back for Clarke later though, as he was man enough to comment that Lindros should be a Hall of Famer when asked by a reporter to comment on his career accomplishments.

I can see that happening Lets GoPens. After everything between Big-E & Philly managment how would the fans treat him anyway.

Never a rift between big E and the fans....strictly Camp Lindros against Bobby Clarke. Trust me he would've been cheered as loud as anyone there. Too bad.

And what's with the 4 week layoff from death to memorial service? Just askin'....

I don't know, Philly fans did boo Santa Claus and they have a jail at trheir football stadium. Me thinks it would not have been as warm as you are saying.

Personally I don't think Lindros merrits the Hall of Fame.

Yes his career was cut short due to fragility but he was no Mario even when he was healthy.

Well, considering booing Santa and having a jail are such original comments, I wouldn't expect you to understand. Come on man, you're better than that.

Lindros (when healthy) may have been the most exciting player to watch in the entire NHL, let alone most exciting Flyer. He should attend and he would receive a huge applause from the crowd. I think he's bowing out; and why would a memorial service be held so long after the death?

September 4, 2008  11:09 AM ET

It's good to hear the fans would have greeted him well Weapon X. He gave alot to that team. Damn near his life. I just wasn't sure how the fans would react to him with the rift between BigE and Clarke. I know Clarke is considered royalty in Philly sports, as well he should be.

Lindros wants his number retired in Quebec city!

Dude, go to Philly .com and look at the responses to the article "Lindros explains declining farewell." While a couple are positive, some are very negative. including the comment "grow a pair...see ya mushbrains." Classy right?

September 4, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Philly, keeping it classy like always

Egged his house once, when he lived in washington township.

They should bring in Jan Hlavic to take his place.

If Lindros gets int o The HOF, it'll be a disgrace. He was a whiny, injury prone big galoot. I agree that the trade demand was a constant, almost as much as his injuries
