Pettitte's NY future unclear

The smart money early this season would have been on the Yankees re-signing one of their veteran starting pitchers -- Andy Pettitte -- while saying thank you and so long to the other, Mike Mussina. With just a few weeks left in the season, the odds have shifted. Mussina's excellent season has been well-documented. Whether or not the 39-year-old wants to continue pitching in 2009 is up in the air. But whether or not the Yankees will offer him a contract for next season is not. If Mussina wants to return for a reasonable contract, the Yankees almost certainly will make that option available. The more intriguing question could be what they decide to do with Pettitte. Like Mussina, Pettitte has not made a final decision about what he wants to do next year, at least not publicly. In an interview this week, though, Pettitte sure sounded like someone who will want to pitch at least one more season, and to be a part of the new Yankee Stadium.

Andy is a good guy for the most part and has served the Yankees well over his career, but how can they NOT sign Mussina and bid Farewell to Pettitte? It's not crazy to think both are gone so the Bronx Blunders can go for youth.

yanks are gonna have a 8 man rotation next year

September 5, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Sign him, cause by May next year the Yanks will be having fans pitch due to failure of the pitching staff. At least Pettitte and Moose will still be around.

Why would any player even consider the Yankees at something called "reasonable" money?

September 5, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Pettite is one of the main reasons the Yanks have struggles this year.
he has been mediocre.
He is supposed to be the great 2nd half pitcher........
he has been BAD since the break, when we need iim to be our #1 or 2

I would cut bait with BOTH.
Muss CAN'T duplicate this season - impossible
and to be honest......I'd rather go down with YOUNGsters than
old guys who even if we did make the playoffs- get BOMBED by real playoff teams

Ghost - remember the Yankees have their own definition of "reasonable"

September 5, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Pettitte is 13-11 this year, with a 4.52 era, had an OK season last year, and pitched fine down the stretch, but this year he is not as strong in the second half. The last two weeks of August, he did not eat up enough innings. (10 or so in 3 games?) If he bounces back with good performance in september with be the tale of the tape. He probably is a number 5 guy next year. OK, but the problem with the yankees, is that they have 3 or 4 number 5 type guys. He is a lefty. But Depending on how they do in the off season, Mussina to be the number 3? next year behind Wang and an FA starter, Next two? Ponson? Pavano? Pettitte? Rasner? Hughs? Kennedy? . Pick your poison.

September 5, 2008  10:11 AM ET

you forgot Joba Tony, Joba is a starter, better be.
Mussina gets resigned for a year and less money. Pettitr probably retires...this is probably not even an option for the Yanks.

Pettitte is no where near "one of the main reasons."

September 5, 2008  10:15 AM ET

What's up, AllStarz, Tony?

September 5, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Bring Igawa back!!!

September 5, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Sup Slinky.

I would like them to bring back Moose, he is a veteran pitcher, he looks great right now, i know he goes through these "adjustment" periods where he looks terrible, but he really is a very good, HoF?, pitcher. I am not saying give him alot of money and a long contract, I would like to see 1 year contracts and progressively less money for him, he could get to 300, I would like to see the Yankees give him that chance, and if he is capable of doing it it would be worth the money to get those wins over the next two to three years. But I don't want to see them sign him to a three year deal.

September 5, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Yeah, Pettite has not been dominant, but you can blame it on the lack of clutch hitting.

September 5, 2008  10:55 AM ET

It's the hitting, stupid(s).

2007:
Team ERA: 4.49
Team runs: 968 (5.98/game)

2008:
Team ERA: 4.36
Team runs: 684 (4.88/game)

Morning, AllStarz...good time last night.

September 5, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Tony, you missed some fun.

Hey, Slink!

September 5, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Morning all. Good times last night! And I am sorry to hear Pettite's future with the Yanks is unclear. Let me clear it up for you, Andy: You are free to go at your earliest convenience.

Try and have a little respect for the man. He did help us win a bunch of rings, which are, of course, the definitive answer to any arguemtn with a Red Sox fan!
