Flyers expect Gagne to return

Flyers coach John Stevens and general manager Paul Holmgren think forward Simon Gagne will be at 100 percent this season. Is it blind optimism when you consider that former Flyers Eric Lindros and Keith Primeau were shells of themselves after suffering concussions? Or can Gagne, who played in just 25 games last season after suffering a concussion, regain his 40-goal form and make the upstart Flyers a formidable Stanley Cup contender? No one knows for sure. If Gagne returns to health, he would be the club's biggest off-season "addition."

Was this his first concussion?

He could be but can he come back at 100%. You never know how it is going to effect them. Good luck to him.

We have the same core group back from last year. With Gagne back and healthy (although with concussion's you never really know what's going to happen) we could get to the cup.

No he had a few in a short span, two I think.

This guy can be a beast if he's healthy. If he's 100%, he can not only benefit the Flyers, but Canada's Olympic team in 2010.

September 5, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Didn't he get the second one of those right after he came back from the first one? He was back for a couple of games and right back out.

September 5, 2008  09:18 AM ET

It was originally misdiagnosed as several concussions. When the team sent him for a second opinion it was revealed that he only had one true concussion and was suffering from post-concussion syndrome. He simply never gave it enough time to heal. Now that he has taken enough time to truly heal, he should be ok.

darkstorm must be a doctor. How about Lindros saying he wont attend the ceremony at the Spectrum on Sept 27th because he has a close friend's mother's memorial service to attend. She died either last week or early this week and her memorial service isnt until the 27th? Wouldnt she be smelling pretty bad by then? Come on Eric, you can do better than that...

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV.

I didn't know he had any close friends, I thought he burned most of those bridges by sleeping with their wives. (see: Brind'Amour, Rod)

I sure hope Gagne returns! He's the straw that stirs the Flyers drink on the O line.

Weapon X

He'd better be careful, as should Philly. If I was in Philly, I'd get a fw doctors to check this guy out...a lot. He can be the franchise player...(also the only Flyer I've ever liked since Dejardins)
If they aren't careful, if Gagne isn't ready to play and gets hit again in the head, he'll be playing "Wheel of Fortune" with the Lindros, (which one am I again?) brothers

Sure, he'll be 100% to start the season. One hit, though, and it's back to the CAT scan table.

September 5, 2008  11:52 AM ET

He is a question mark, no doubt. But if he does come back 100% than the Flyers made the best offseason move of them all.

September 5, 2008  12:25 PM ET

Given the nature of concussions accross all sports and what they have done to stars in their prome, Simon should be careful. And no offense Philly Dave, I'd rather have Hossa than gagne coming off concussions, 100% or not. Once you have one, another is easier to get.

As a fan of both Briere and Gagne I hope he'll be 100% healthy again. This duo could outpace so many enemy lines. If Gagne fully recovers, look for Briere to surpass 90-point barrier again.

September 5, 2008  02:30 PM ET

he's actually been getting these shots; a brand new treatment for post concussion syndrom. What these shots do exactly, i'm not too sure, but it's a brand new treatment and it seems to have "revolutionized" the healing of concussions. i read it in the paper a few weeks ago...i hope it actually works?

September 5, 2008  03:18 PM ET

I just hope he doesn't turn into another Lindros..., a great player in the prime of his career, only to be concussed into retirement.

With Claude Giroux playing on the other side of Simon, it will be a lethal line.
