Will Tigers bring Leyland back?

06:08 AM ET 09.05 | Jim Leyland admits he has been part of the problem. He intends to be part of the solution, too. "I hope I sign an extension shortly," said Leyland, who has one year left on his contract. "I don't know if that's going to happen or not. I want to manage a few more years, and I want to manage the Tigers. "Is that going to happen? I have no idea. That will be up to somebody else. I have a contract for next year. I don't even know if I'm going to be here next year. We could all get fired. But do I want to manage? Yes. And I want to manage the Tigers." Let's assume that Mike Ilitch wants Leyland back -- a safe bet.

Good manager if he has the horses and the breaks.

There are many good managers if they have the horses and the breaks.
Leyland will be back, but if I were Illitch and Dombrowski, I would consider holding off on that one year extention to see how nex year starts out. If in late May or so things are O.K., they give him the extention. That would prevent "Lame Duck" status.

They kept spooy anderson for along time. The Tiggers have a good team but poor pitchers.

The Tigers poor pitching can be traced back to the pitching coach. Not one Tigers pitcher has progressed under Hernandez they have all regressed. Every single one of them. Leyland is not a great manager and his habit of calling out players in the media is bush league. He is also too loyal to players who are done. Yes i am referring to the human rally killer, Gary Sheffield. Leyland was the right man for the job when he was hired. Not anymore.

I mean, Chuch better not be back next year. If thats the case, and we land a few decent pitching free agents, I tihnk we may be back in the mix. I have a feeling at least one of the willis/garcia experiment will pan out.

Leyland acknowledges he is part of the problem. But is he? Perhaps with someone else in charge of the Tige's this year, they would be wallowing deep in last place despite their talent.
The Tige's were developing a team, but Dom an Ill got impatient and got some superstars. Surprise, the Tige's were no longer a team, and the best efforts of the best manager in baseball could only keep the season from total disaster.

I agree^^^. Also, before you fire a manager, you have to ask if you can find someone better. I don't think they can right now. Maybe in a few years guys like Larry Parrish or Matt Walbeck would be able to take over. Until then, let Leyland work through this season and see if he can get the Tigers back on track.
