Nogueira-Mir unification bout

After the massive announcement that Randy Couture would return to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 in November, many were left to wonder as to what would happened with a scheduled December showdown between interim champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former champ Frank Mir. Fear not, the bout is still on and will be for the title: "(Couture vs. Lesnar) will go Nov. 15, then the winner will wait to see who wins the interim fight in December. Then we'll have a heavyweight (unification) fight next year," said UFC President Dana White. So there you have it. Two five round heavyweight title tilts in a two month span with the winners facing off in 2009 to unify the titles and get back to having one Heavyweight champion in the UFC.

Is that supposed to be Mir on the bottom?

This should be a good matchup. Both take a lot of punches to try to secure a submission.

This story line seems kinda WWE-ish....

Loki, not sure what you mean. They named Nog the interim champ when they thought Randy wasn't coming back. They can't just say sorry dude you're out. I like how they decided to do it. Keep the Nog-Mir fight and have them fight the winner of the Randy-Brock fight. I think that's a fair way to do it, and we'll get three big heavyweight fights to look forward to.

now, instead of having a champ and the top contender(who would naturally fight and determine the champ in one night), there are two champs, several top contenders, and a whole bunch of fights in the making just to resolve the one belt....basically using drama to push peoples' interest in the fights rather than just the fights themselves....

These fights should take enough time for Fedor to fulfill his contract to Affliction by completing his next 2 fights. and then all of a suddden there is another champ to throw into the mix. More drama....more interest...

September 5, 2008  10:22 AM ET

they have basically just set up the main events for the next 5 PPVs in a soap opera that will ultimately determine the best heavyweight...

September 5, 2008  10:32 AM ET

Loki, they setup the HW fights for 3 PPVs. They already had Nog Mir setup. What would have been your resolution to it? If Mir-Nog were fighting for the belt they would have still put Randy and Brock in there against each other. Since no one beat Randy for the title they still consider him the champ. I could honestly care less who they consider the champ now. I am psyched by the fact there there are some serious HW fights coming up in the UFC and I think they will al be good ones.

Isn't every PPV to show who is the best??? I'm not really sure why you are so cynical when the UFC is lining up fights like these.

The only drama that is here is the perceived drama you are creating... This isn't drama, these are real MMA fights.

Loki, I have to agree with Jason70 on this. This is the only fair way to do it, and it's almost has an old school feeling about it. A tournament to decide who is the best. That's how we Americans decide who's the best in every other sport (save NCCA Football, and don't even get me started on that). This is perfect the way it is. And if/when Fedor comes to the UFC, he won't be a champion. No one outside of Affliction even thinks the WAMMA title is even close to legit.

I am starting to wonder....the fights are the only thing that seems real anymore....now there are arguements in the ring (Noons/Diaz) with rumors that there is a script of some sort...

a tourneyment is the way to go without a doubt...what I am saying is that this doesn't seem like the natural resolution to a problem that just came up....it seems more like there was a plan in place for longer....Couture leaves the UFC for about the same amount of time wrestlers go on hiatus from WWE every so often.....and then he comes back with great fanfare to defend his title and complicate the rankings and seedings...sounds like the Rock just finished filming a movie and is going back to the ring kinda thing....

But the pride heavyweight title he had was-- Fedor is the man and I'd love to see him fight both Couture and fight Lesnar and anyone else. Until he gets old or retires he is THE LAST EMPEROR

I just hope that with the addition of Lesnar that the UFC doesn't become WWE light. His antics after the Herring fight were garbage.

September 5, 2008  02:08 PM ET

Its great and all but what happens if Mir wins and Lesnar wins, do we really want to see them fight again so soon???

after the first fight, Mir said he wouldn't get back in the cage with Lesnar...I guess he would have to change that story....

September 5, 2008  06:52 PM ET

Good thats how it should be. But when its all said and done Lesnar will be the unified Champ........that's right you heard it first from Hank Hill

September 5, 2008  07:49 PM ET

wamma may not be legit... but fedor is still the best in the world, ask big nog...

Yup, trailer park trashy in my mind. Low class just like that thing he calls a haircut.
