Schmidt's e-mail irks Mets

Mike Schmidt is full of it. At least that was the Mets' interpretation of the Hall of Fame third baseman's motivational e-mail to the Phillies yesterday. In a message that was posted on the Phillies' clubhouse door, Schmidt, who spent his entire career in Philadelphia, wrote, in part: "The Mets know you're better than they are. They remember last year. You guys are never out of the game. Welcome to the challenge that confronts you this weekend." David Wright's reaction? "He is obviously biased in his e-mails," Wright said after the Mets' 3-0 loss to the Phillies in the opener of a three-game series last night. "I see a starting pitcher that goes out and throws like Brett Myers [last night's starter], that works much better than a rally cry from a former player." Damion Easley seemed clearly agitated by Schmidt's shot at the Mets. "I definitely don't appreciate the comment, but the only thing to be done is prove it on the field - bottom line," Easley said.

What do you want from the guy? He was a lifer in Philly. He is just trying to inspire the franchise he played a whole career for.

The best way the Mets can counter is by burying the ghosts of that horrid choke last season and beating the Phils this weekend. Not much to this story.

Hahahahaha.... The guy is a true philly fan. The fact the the mets let that get to them is hilarious though.

September 6, 2008  09:35 AM ET

I heard Ron Swoboda sent the mets a post card.

just watch the METS win the next 2 games against the phillies and they can shove the email up the phillies backside

September 6, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Phillies were better than the Mets last night. I agree with the thinking that Schmidt and the Phillies is like peanut and jelly... So what that he left an email saying that the Phillies were better than the Mets. Now it would have been news if Michael Jack Schmidt said that the Phillies were lower than worm chyte compared to the Mets.

September 6, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Who knew Mike Schmidt could even write?

September 6, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Just like Jose Reyes and Fernando Tatis iritate every other team in baseball with that **** little dance they do when Tatis hits a homerun.

September 6, 2008  10:30 AM ET

How is Mike Schmidt's email any business of the Mets. You don't see Ryan Howard getting upset when HoJo sends emails to David Wright with naked pictures, do you?

September 6, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Are you kidding me?! ROFLMAO

Oh teh noes! Mike Jack Schmidt sent the Philadelphia Phillies an email saying they are teh bestest!

Wouldnt it be rightfully upsetting if say...Howard Johnson sent them an email saying the mets know the Phillies are better?

That would upset me as a met (being a met would also upset me). But a HOF Phillie Lifer...saying basically, "Lets go Phillies! LETS GO!" is nothing more than rah rah.

See...these are the reason the New York Metrosexuals are not very well recieved. They are babies.

You mean like the human windmill first basemen the Phils have who stands and watches his prodigious homers that are routine fly ball outs to LF anywhere else? Or the Melky Cabrera wannabee you have playing center who stands and points at opposing dugouts after he scores? Get a grip you dope.

September 6, 2008  11:13 AM ET

I think Jose and a nobody like Tatis is a little more irritating though.

September 6, 2008  11:14 AM ET

At least the Mets went out and showed them last night.....that was my favorite part of the story.

September 6, 2008  11:25 AM ET

He's aPhillie.....what do you expect him to say? If the Mets don't like his comments, they should come out and beat the phils......that'd be the best way to respond.

September 6, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Why do Mets players care what a former Philly homer player says?

This story has arms that dont hold, but just reach.

I bet a nobody like Tatis would've been embraced by Philly in place of Jenkins earlier in the year though and no one wouldve cared.

Showed them what?

The Phillies will win the division again this year. The Mets will choke it away, and the Cubs will get swept in the first round of the playoffs. Look for the Brewers in the World Series.

Schmidt: "Hey guys, go beat the Mets! Remember their collapse last year? Yeah, that was awesome. You can do it!"

Mets: "Waaaaaaaaaaah! Waaaaaaaaaaaah! You can't say that stuff! It offends us! We try really hard and stuff!"
