Giant accuses 'Skin of cheap shot

It's a long season, with plenty of time and games between now and Nov. 30, but you can be sure Mathias Kiwanuka will be counting the days until he meets up again with Chris Samuels. It won't be a pleasant reunion. Kiwanuka is relieved he did not re-injure the left ankle that last season suffered extensive damage - along with a fractured left fibula - when Samuels pulled what was either a dirty play or at the very least a play lacking in any sportsmanship on the last play of Thursday night's 16-7 season-opening victory over the Redskins. That relief, though, could not calm the anger Kiwanuka felt about what he's certain was a cheap shot and "dirty play" by a player on a heated NFC East rival. The game was already decided when the Redskins were frantically and fairly pathetically trying to cobble together a final drive. Barely after quarterback Jason Campbell got the snap, Kiwanuka cleanly and quickly beat Samuels - a top-notch left tackle - with a speed rush to the outside. Kiwanuka had an open pathway to Campbell but never came close. Samuels from behind leaped at Kiwanuka's legs, landing directly on his lower left leg, a tackle that prompted a penalty flag that was not enforced, as the game was over. Samuels waved his arms in frustration, as if he was disappointed in what transpired.

Yeah, cheap shots are crappy. Understand Samuel's frustration but, come on, why don't you just use the fact that he blew by you a ton as motivation to work harder and get better. Now you have to watch your own legs.

The way this team looks I think you might see alot of that this year.

September 6, 2008  09:23 AM ET

what about that altercation between pierce and kendall. Pierce had his helmet pushes off his head then kendall came up to him and headbutted him in the face with his cage. What a coward. In any case I can't wait until the rematch.

September 6, 2008  09:26 AM ET

There certainly is no love lost between these two teams. Jacobs and Washington were going at it, Pierce and Kendall were going at it, and Kiwi and Samuels now.

September 6, 2008  09:31 AM ET

It will be interesting. I suspect the league will, and should , fine Samuels and Kendall for what it is worth. If DBs like Williams can get warned about horse collars, then the same should go for all players who cross over the line....A fine is not much of a penalty..

Samuels ran right over to him after he cut him down, he knew he did wrong. Thank god the x-rays on Kiwi are negative.

On another note, is there a defensive player out there that is better than Justin Tuck? I think not.

September 6, 2008  09:53 AM ET

sacked92 ..No. That was too easy of a question.

September 6, 2008  09:53 AM ET

This was the first football game I'd been able to see in 18 months (cable TV issues) and all I can say is "Holy Farglesnot"!

September 6, 2008  09:57 AM ET

The NFL needs to start doling out suspensions for these sort of things. I really don't give a rat's hiney if a player takes a whiff of grass, that's hardly performance enhancing stuff. The league has its priorities skewed.

September 6, 2008  10:07 AM ET

These things happen in football games. Slap him with his penalty/fine and lets all move on. Football = adreneline and adreneline = foolish judgement. See the UFC for details.

September 6, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Leave it to the member of the Giants to complain, quit being a ****, it happens, its football. It was the end of the game, Giants won, go call your mommy and tell you how unfair you were treated.

September 6, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Cut me a break!! It's no different than a tackle getting called for holding to try to protect his QB. I don't think Samuel in any way was out to injure a player, but Kianawacka did not go down very gracefully. I think Kianawauka was going to light into the back of Campbell with all of his might, on the last play of the game no less, had he gotten past Samuels.

I haven't heard of the league taking any action so I guess it was not that big a deal. Deal with it!! We're going 5-11 anyway.

September 6, 2008  10:29 AM ET

This is what payback is all about. When you get your rematch game we better see some fireworks! And I don't mean some pushing and shoving, I want a brawl!

September 6, 2008  10:30 AM ET

And yea, Justin Tuck should be voted NFL Player of the Year

September 6, 2008  10:31 AM ET

it wasn't a cheap shot ... it was a poor play ... it was gonna' be the last play, Kiwi had the guy beat and the only thing Samuels could do was try to hold ... couldn't even do that right, Kiwi fell and Samuels fell on top ... I don't think that's a cheap shot ...

September 6, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Samuels was just protecting his QB, if he hadn't tackled Kiwanuka, he would have destroyed Campbell from behind. There was no malcontent behind the play, even Antonio Pierce said Chris is not that type of guy or player to do such a play with the intent to hurt Kiwanuka. You could tell Samuels was worried about Kiwanuka and went over immediately to him to see if he was alright, no maliciousness on the side of Samuels, he was simply protecting his QB.

September 6, 2008  11:18 AM ET

shut up and just play

that's what his job is, to protect the QB...any way possible.

hey, he could pushed him down, then cleated him in the ankle or thigh like mike vicks lil bro did at VT

September 6, 2008  11:20 AM ET

justin tuck is not player of the year canidate, unless he gets over 15 sacks.

he had an excellent game, if he can do that consistently id think so tho.
kid thats fun to watch play the game

September 6, 2008  11:24 AM ET

I want to see a fist fight next time, I even want to see Eli get in a fist fight with their defensive captain.

Riggs

When a guy lost half his season last year due to a broken leg and torn ankle, you damn right the guy is gonna be upset and for good reason. Whether Samuels intended to do it or not, that potentially could have been a devasting injury to not only the team but Kiwi as well. The Giants lost their best player in a meaningless game already, we dont wanna lose another top notch defensive player at the end of a decided game, the FIRST game of the season....I will credit Samuels tho with at least showing he was concerned for Kiwi after the play.
