Eric Mangini is open to the idea of deported quarterback Chad Pennington returning to the Jets -- as a coach. Two days before the Jets open the regular season on the road with an AFC East grudge match against Pennington's new team, the Miami Dolphins, Mangini endorsed the possibility of finding Pennington a headset and a spot on the Jets' sideline.

Interesting, Pennington as a Coach though? Right now I can't see it happening but then again... I do have respect for Chad after all he was the face of the Jets fro eight years and I wouldn't mind if he came back, I'm just still pissed that they released him so fast like they did, I mean although Chad isn't the greatest I believe ESPN and SI said he is one of the most accurate passers in the NFL.

September 6, 2008  09:07 AM ET

A bit of an odd comment I think. I haven't heard anything about Chad saying he wishes to coach after he finishes playing, or that he is looking to finish playing any time soon. So why would Mangini come out with these sort of comments?!

September 6, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Does he mean NOW. If he hasn't noticed, Pennington is a starter with another team, and I think he's under contract. What a bizzare comment.

September 6, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Does he mean as the Head Coach? What a guy. How magnanimous of him...

September 6, 2008  09:34 AM ET

This "story" had to be taken out of context. These comments by Mangini coming from out of the blue like this? Doesn't make sense.

September 6, 2008  10:00 AM ET

After they unceremoniously dumped him for look-at-me-queen, yea, 50yearfan, I thing as head coach is the only way he'd set foot there again. Chances are the job will be open within 2 seasons. The Jet's decision to load up with over the hill overpaid free agents is a proven path to failure.

September 6, 2008  10:18 AM ET

fiflo-
you really have it TOTALLY warped....

chad wasn't 'dumped'
he was given his release so he could sign ANYWHERE....

and who is 'over the hill' ?
and ' overpaid'....this year with the cap increasing and when the barganing agreement is up soon- there likely either won't be a cap or it will be huge...so it is irrelevant.

September 6, 2008  10:33 AM ET

why would pennington go back?

September 6, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Look in here SI, there is an interesting article about Favre,
Second thoughts regarding retirement?
But agree a bit odd, I hope Chad succeeds in Miami, anyway,
Got to prove doubters wrong, Wish Chad the best.
Brett Favres is another thing, enjoy being beat up!!!
"Old man look at my life, I'm allot like you were....."

Chad will CERTAINLY be a coach - IF he wants to when he is done playing
His father is a coach- he is a SMART guy.

The context of the story is off -
it is referring to when his playing career is over.

Chad was not 'wronged' by the Jets-
it is business.....
Farve was available- granted he is on the downside of his career-
but he is BETTER right now - than chad or clemens.
The jets rolled the dice.

- as I said- chad was released so he could find another team-
Chad has no long-term ill-will towards the Jets-
'he knows it was a business decision.

September 6, 2008  10:55 AM ET

someone will need to take over Mangini's job when he's fired after next season. why not chad in 2010..

September 6, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Why the heck would he want him as a coach? Shrugs*..I don't think that Pennington would go back though...

September 6, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Maybe Favre could go back to the Packers as a coach, too.....

September 6, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Maybe Pennington will beat the Jets' asz this week.

September 6, 2008  12:21 PM ET

I hope he does, Tell It.......

September 6, 2008  02:14 PM ET

I would find that very entertaining. The Jets are awful for a wide number of reasons, not just the play of Pennington. I guess that's just part of being the QB on any team. More credit than deserved when you win and more blame than you deserve when you lose. I would like to see anyone in the AFC east knock the Pats of their perch (one can dream can't they?)

September 6, 2008  02:14 PM ET

I saw the interview. Mangini wasn't connecting it to anything, just commenting on Chad's abilities.

Sure gives Chad a little job security, though.

September 6, 2008  03:05 PM ET

chad pennington is stink cant throw far almost 50 to 60 yard he is still sore his right arm he need money that it.

September 6, 2008  03:58 PM ET

And this would hamper his leadership and coaching ability how?

September 6, 2008  04:38 PM ET

jgb, I didn't follow the Chad dram too closely, I assumed there would be ill feeling there since Chad was pegged to be the franchise QB not too long ago, I was not aware it was a clean break.

Like you say, he is certainly a smart guy. I watched some of his play in pre-season with Miami, and I was impressed at how involved he was with the other QB's on the sideline. Very different from Favre, who just just sat alone away from Rodgers and moped last year when he was knocked out of the Dallas game.
