Why Pistons distance from Isiah

Pistons owner Bill Davidson discussed the fallout between the team and Isiah Thomas. "Well, I was very, very close to Isiah, and there were times he was almost like a son. But, because of his background, um ... I told him he had to change -- you know, coming from where he came from. I said, "You've got it made now. Don't keep doing those things that you've been doing." I won't tell you what they are. But he couldn't change.

It's hard for a tiger to lose it's stripes. In this case the stripes being the street. Thug life.

why pistons distance themselves ?
isn't it freakin obvious?
everything he gets himself involved with turns to s h ! t

Davidson is smart enough not to allow zeke to weasel himself into the franchise

Some of the people he crossed during his playing days:
Michael Jordan
Larry Bird
Little Isiah thought he's bigger than MJ and Larry. Bigger head, yes. And nothing else.

People he crossed in his post-playing career:
New York city folks
Second only to Dubya in alienating more people from himself.

Anti-Midas Touch:
CBA
Pacers
Knicks
Ten-foot pole needed when dealing with him.

I think that the more people deal with this guy, the more they realize Isiah Thomas has some real character and professional issues that bring down those around him.

On a brighter note, maybe he could coach in the WNBA!

September 6, 2008  10:25 AM ET

He is a cancer to every team he plays with.

September 6, 2008  10:54 AM ET

The league turned a blind eye to Isiah's troubles the past two years for some reason (does he have dirt on the front office?). And in turn, they let a legendary franchise get tarnished forever. Shame on Isiah. Shame on the league for not jumping in and suspending him early on. Bad guy...bad story. If I never read another story on him it would be great!

I guess they couldn't get the streets of Chcago out of him. Too much inner city black still festering in him?

Hooolllddd on. I am no Isiah fan, having grown up in LA and suffered through a Pistons championship when Magic and Byron were hurt. Isiah was a GREAT point guard (top ten), and a killer on the court, a winner. His success there, and in life, is directly resultant of his origins: his aggressive tactics, his fearlessness hiding insecurity (like many young people from the streets, emasculated yet acting like kings). He is great because where he is from, and this also limits him. LIke many of us...

September 6, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Isiah is King Turdis. Everything he touches turns to s-h-i-_.

September 6, 2008  12:14 PM ET

Here we go again. Isiah was NEVER involved with Thug-Life. His brother was, but basketball kept him on the straight and narrow. He went to college and after 1 year, he declared himself eligible for the draft. It's totally insane to assume that every Black kid is a Thug simply because he grew up in the hood. Isiah is without a doubt one of the league's worst examples of an executive, but the streets had nothing to do with it.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about snatch.

September 6, 2008  02:42 PM ET

King4kong -
Don't forget he was one of the owners of the Toronto Raptors expansion team.
After a couple years, the other owners bought him out and sent him packing cuz he was giving away all the free tickets and team merchandise to his buddies and the college player he wanted to draft (and their buddies)
The other owners cut their losses and bought Isiah out.
He's absolutely no business man - nor coach

What does this mean ? Inner City black that me grew up in the hood went to Graduated from G.W. (no athletic scholarship) and still live in the inner city. In 2008 I see black men are still defined by where they live & grow up. The only thing I ever heard Isiah doing was pressing some chick for sex and that has nothing to do with inner city black. Men of all races & back ground have done that stupid crap. He is only good on the court not the front office just like Jordan and he had questionable dealings with woman too.

I was wondering the same thing.
Giving it some thought, it appears to be a reference to his general "rough-guy", rowdy type of behavior. It includes his attitude toward women - treating them as objects - and toward other peers and professionals.
To be fair, Isiah was not that bad. His behavior was no worse than that of half the NBA. Many players had similar vices.
However, it becomes an issue when Isiah made the transition to coach / GM after his playing days. If you look at other players who are allowed to make this transition, they come from the pool of players who were mature, or who grew up and became mature.
Isiah grew older, but did not complete the process of growing up, and that's what led to his shortcomings as a coach and GM.

September 6, 2008  04:40 PM ET

Mistake on the Pistons part. Isiah's failures were all after his playing days. However, as a Piston he was one of the best players in the game. They do not have to hire Isiah as a coach or put him in the front office but they should at least embrace him as the great player he was.

isiah is a moron plain & simple!

It's obvious to me that some of you guys don't know what a thug is. Isiah Thomas is not what you call a thug. Horrible GM? Sure. Not the best coach? I agree.
Ahung says he is a 'cancer to every team he plays with.' Well I guess there are about thirty teams that would like to have that cancer as their starting pg. He was not a bad teammate. There is no one with more heart than Isiah. Some of these players need to watch video of him and see how hurt he was when they lost a playoff game. He could not sleep at night when he lost! That is a commitment to this game!
Being from Detroit, I watched Isiah through all his years in the league. He is without a doubt, one of the best ten players to ever suit up. As a player, there just were not many better than him. As a GM, he is much like Jordan and Bird... players that are HOFers make bad GM's as a rule because they expect all players to perform as they did. Impossible!!!

You must have misunderstood what I said. I meant as a GM he's been a cancer too every team he's with.
