Why LPGA reversed its policy
Responding to protests, the Ladies Professional Golf Assn. announced Friday that it would back down on suspending golfers who do not speak adequate English, reversing a controversial decision that had thrown the organization smack into the nation's long-running culture wars. The LPGA Tour had announced last month that it would suspend golfers who could not speak English in media interviews, acceptance speeches and tournaments by 2009, saying that language fluency was critical to the sport's promotion and marketing efforts. But what began as an internal marketing move quickly devolved into a raucous debate over culture, ethnicity and language. After a bombardment of public protest, LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens said Friday that the group would issue a revised policy by year's end that would not include suspensions. The action came after some of the tour's own corporate sponsors, such as State Farm, asked the organization to review its policy.

Lesson Learned: You can speak english, but not in America!

Why?
The answer is plain and simple.
Bivens wanted to keep her job.
It's about time she got slapped.
She should get fired for trying to stop the Koreans from being the force they are on the tour.
Bivens took a page right out of Adolf ****'s playbook: ethnic cleansing.

Yes. The English-only requirement and ethnic cleansing are virtually identical issues.
What a moke.

As long as they're paying taxes on what they win - who cares what language they speak.

Well said Johnny.
You can bet this entire thing was not actually promulgated by a couple of whiny corporate executives playing with a Korean who can't speak English but a direct desire to check the huge influx of Korean and Asian players who are dominate on the LPGA.
Bivens can deny it until she turns blue in the face. But we can all see that this move had one purpose: to reduce all the Asians playing.
Shame on Bivens. I hope she gets booted but good by this. I'm glad she isn't running the country.

Koreans will kill what little interest there is in this tour. Jan Stephenson was right when she said this years ago.

Suspensions aren't the way to go, but it's naive to think that less marketable players aren't going to come back to bite the LPGA. This isn't the NFL which has owners who foot the bills. If the players can't effectively draw and hold sponsors, the LPGA is in trouble. All you have to do is look at the NHL to see what happens when fans can't relate to players. uninterested fans = uninterested sponsors = no revenue = no more tour. Ultimately, it comes down to $$$. Same reason the PGA suspends players who are no-shows for corporate sponsored pro-ams. They can't afford to lose sponsorships.
At the end of the day, the LPGA doesn't have the right to suspend these players for not speaking English, but if the players don't take responsibility to help maintain the financial strength of the LPGA, they're going to be giving lessons for a living instead of playing for big prize money.

Bivens is right. The Koreans will kill what little interest there is in the LPGA. Unless of course they are pretty and well-dressed Koreans.

Sad to say, but if the Korean's do in fact increase thier numbers, it will be interesting to see what happens to the LPGA's numbers.
