FC Barcelona has had preliminary talks with the MLS about expanding its empire to the United States with the creation of a sister team in Miami, Florida. Club president Joan Laporta is keen to set up the venture along the lines of Chivas de Guadalajara's Chivas USA club.

So now Boca Juniors or FC Barcelona for a new Miami team.... hmm... I think it'd be easier to focus on the new teams that haven't had a shot yet... Seattle next year, then +2 is probably Vancouver + St Louis... and if it goes +2 beyond that probably Montreal + Portland.... then hopefully it would end for a while and let the dust settle.

But this is a great idea, for big clubs expanding to MLS

Chivas USA seemed to turn out well

But they need to find out where FC Barca fans are the biggest in MLS

sensational!

It's fine if Barca wants to own a team in the US, but please don't call it Barcalona Miami or Barcalona USA. It sounds Bush league and it's so blatant. Naming a team in one city after ANOTHER city? That's just stupid.

I know Barca is a worldwide brand and all, but this is like naming a team New York Liverpool or Chicago Moscow. It's dumb. The fans can see right through this. At least let Miami have it's own identity.

Seattle's joining in 2009 and Philly in 2010. After that, MLS should stop expanding and reinforce links with USL. If Barcelona wants a team, they could buy one and move it to Miami (though I am fully in support of Barcelona owning a team).

Good point, Blackaces. No Barca USA or something like that. And give the team it's own identity (i.e. a different shirt, esp. since Barca's is iconic).

Soon the MLS will really be a farm system for primiere teams

If Laporta wasn't such a separatista punk then yes, I'd be all for it. Until someone else steps in and heads up FC Barcelona then I'd give it the thumbs down.

Is Frank Rijkaard the best picture they could find to represent FC Barcelona management? That's weak.

My thoughts exactly. I was going to ask the same thing.

September 6, 2008  01:42 PM ET

i agree that barca usa would be condescending to us. how about Lokomotiv Moscow (ID), Red Star Belgrade (MT) or Hannover (ND) 96

what a joke, I knew that damn Chivas thing was a bad idea

seriously, another great idea for a relegation system, why should Barca get a MLS team when starting from scratch, let them start a USL2 team and work their way up,

Portland, Vancouver and Montreal all have solid clubs that deserve a chance to earn a spot in MLS, why should they be snubbed just becuase a famous club wants to explore the American market?

September 6, 2008  02:03 PM ET

how about they call it FCB Miami. I Would be a huge fan of them coming to america. then ronny can come back to barca in 5 years

September 6, 2008  02:45 PM ET

also, didnt an MLS team in Miami already fold? anyone remember the Fusion?

September 6, 2008  02:55 PM ET

This may be a non-issue as there's a good chance that Laporta's days are numbered at Barca. He's hanging on by a thread after what amounts to a vote of no confidence just a couple of weeks ago. Although he was extended 2 more years, only 942 votes were cast (with a 55% approval rating) out of 4000+ possible votes, the rest opted not to cast a ballot. 518 out of 4000 backed him...

The assembly can still vote him out prior to the 2 years if a majority of the total assmbly supports it. They dropped their home opener to a newly promoted side after spending 100 million euro this summer. Hope Jean is renting his pad

Makes sense, well sort of. Barca can take advantage of the large Hispanic population in South Florida but considering that the Fusion already folded in Miami, they are going to need something to get a huge draw out there.

September 6, 2008  05:54 PM ET

this is to respond to the idea pawn has, about letting barca open a team in the third division. ok that makes sense but the MLS is not stablishes like a regular league, is instead base out of the NFL, NBA, and so for. each city has a team and all they have to worry about is the playoffs, big deal make the play off the best 8 of what 12 teams, come on thats just a joke. instead it should be like any other league in the world. a third division, a second division and the top tier league. so whichever two teams end up at the botton of one league they drop to the next one and the top two of a lower league goes up a league. that way the real level of MLS will increase exponentially. everybody will play to save the money that being in the MLS means.

September 6, 2008  05:56 PM ET

Crap idea, that's all I'm saying.

September 6, 2008  06:22 PM ET

Sure Miami has a large Hispanic population but they're Cubans and their main sport is Baseball. Hell football is pretty popular down there. The process of new teams should be organic. Where ever there's demand and a relatively good infrastructure, that's where the new teams should come up.

September 6, 2008  06:29 PM ET

yeah, create another money making machine *rolleyes* that is excatly what football needs. Not a multilayer support. Not a healthy structure, nope. Just another marketing platform.

September 6, 2008  08:03 PM ET

I think it's a good idea but seriously stop adding teams to the MLS and start focusing on farming and youth systems, how many young players (especially young latino players) has the US missed that could and should be contributing to the USMNT or at the very least to the MLS. They need to start thinking of the future in terms of quality and not just financial terms.

I'm ok with a Barcelona USA named MLS team, but not sure about Miami, if they brought Dinho or Titi they will have a chance to succeed there, otherwise...

September 6, 2008  10:13 PM ET

I'm all for it, at least I'd be able to watch SOME decent games back here in Miami. The fan base IS here, they just a decent stadium and some name players.

September 6, 2008  10:36 PM ET

You think it would be like:

Barcelona de Ecuador? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelona_Sporting_Club

Hmmmm...

September 6, 2008  10:38 PM ET

I agree that Barca should not jump to the front. USL teams should have the first shot at MLS. Besides, I really don't want to see a trend here - we would look foolish if we had ManUSA or BayernUSA. It could get out of hand.

MLS should focus on more important issues like adapting to the international calendar, a single table, and expanding team rosters and salary caps so they can have a chance in international competition.
