Giambi's choice: Talk or get banned
Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is heading toward suspending Jason Giambi next week if the Yankees slugger does not cooperate with former senator George Mitchell's investigation on steroid use, according to a high-ranking MLB official. The official, who talked with Selig but has not been granted permission to speak publicly because of ongoing talks, said Selig wants Giambi's decision by Tuesday.

I agree it's time for Selig to give it a rest. He should have been this vocal way before steroids became an issue.

I agree Selig should have spoke up earlier, but something needs to be done about roids. Why not start now?

Ribeye is absolutely right, I hope Giambi notices as well, your a pain in the **** & have only pulled the team down w/ your sorry ****, but of course he STILL wont agree to a trade, so I believe & hope his career is over! It has to be a little more than coincidence...him not being there allows limp noodle arm Johnny Damon to DH & Melk to play CF

Personally, I think its funny to read how Yankee fans can turn on the players wearing NY pinstripes. Guys like ribeye really make me chuckle, because I'm sure guys like ribeye would be screaming out a different tune if Giambi was having a season like or better than A-Rod. Kick the guys who are down from your own team. Some loyality, huh?
I hope Giambi is suspended as well. Steroids does not belong in the game and was prob. why he got so much money in the first place. However, if Giambi plays ball with the commish, and positive changes start to take place, than Giambi should be allowed to play.
Its about time Selig starts using the pair of baseballs that he has. The game is a joke. Everyone that is doing anything out of the ordinary is now looked upon as being juiced- whether its spoken out or not. Better late than never.

Giambi will talk. They always do. The question is which headline will we read first - "Giambi implicates Bonds!" or "Bonds New Home Run King!"
I guess in either event, baseball will have to decide how to treat not only Bonds' numbers, but anybody else who it can be proven more likerly than not juiced up. Personally, I woud like to see all of the home runs they hit during those times removed from the record book. I realize that it is imperfect and that some guys will slide, but it is the best we can do in fairness to the history of the game, I think.

I dont get it, why punish someone who tells the truth?? So, now the rest of Baseball and other sports will continue to LIE for sure. I am pretty sure almost all the rest of MLB are on performance enhancing drugs, drugs have been in the game for a long time now.. actually all games and sports! Dont punish the people who are honest!!!

A) Jason is the only player who had the balls to admit to using steroids, so at the very least give him credit for that.
B) He used when steroids were not considered an illegal substance, so how does Selig have the right to punish him now??!! You wanna hassle somedody, give the Devil Rays Dukes a vasectomy for crissakes!!
C) Anyone who thinks that a steroid can help anyone hit a fastball or some breaking split-fingered slider..Schwartzenegger would be able to hit at LEAST 80 HR's. It takes talent, something that all the Yankee "Fans" that are drilling Jason now have absolutely none of.
D) Anyone who believes steroids don't break down your body, just look at how often Jason has been on the DL the last few years

My feelings on Giambi aside....Selig can go off himself. I'd say the same thing if this were Bonds. He road the coat tails of all these home run chases when baseball regained its prominence (and road them to a huge paycheck), did nothing about steroids, and now he wants to nail people for a time when no rule was in place. Selig can go play in traffic for all I care.

How can he suspend Giambi without suspending Bonds. Selig is a joke.

JK - A couple responses:
1) Admitting to breaking the law doesn't absolve you of the consequences of your offense.
2) The argument that steroids were not illegal is ridiculous. Bart Giamatti (sp) banned them in 1992 in baseball. There was no enforcement mechanism because of the Union. But still, they were against FEDERAL LAW to use or possess without prescription. If it is against Federal Law baseball doesn't need a special rule to keep players from doing it.
3) Steroids don't help you make contact with the ball, but a lot of warning track fly outs now make it out of the park and some of those balls stopped by the SS now get out of the infield a little quicker. There is a definite impact.
4) No denying steroids have long-term ill-effects, but when he was using them they certainly helped recover during the season - he got plenty of benefit from 'roids.
Sadly, too many people buy the Union's 'not banned at the time' argument and because you can't punish everyone you should punish no one (GEO). He'll probably walk and be hailed as a hero for talking to Mitchell.

Canseco was right....up to 85% of MLB on steroids. So why just this hunt against Giambi....hoping that will allow them to stop Bonds.
All of MLB is corrupt! It's sad that the fans, once again, have been taken advantage of.
Selig allows this to happen in the 90's. They needed the home run chases to bring the game back from their mismanagement.
What a disgraceful LEAGUE (AND YET WHAT A GREAT GAME ).....can't wait until, hopefully, ALL OF THE TRUTH IS EXPOSED!

I'm thinking Ribeye has a good point.
As a Red Sox fan, will someone ask Selig to suspend Lugo & Drew, also. If the Yanks can have their underachievers suspended, why can't we!!!!!
By the way, Mr. Ribeye nice loyalty! I sure hope Jeter keeps hitting or will you be offering him up, too?
One final point....your plan to have him run over won't work. Don't you realize the healing powers of steroids.....he'll probably only miss an inning or two as he gets stitched up.

BigSky...just an interesting point I want to make regarding your comment. You're right about that ban previously made. But lets not forget about what Giambi said. He's basically said nothing specific. His Grand Jury testimony holds no bearing unless hes indicted...his press conference a year or two back made no specific references...and in the paper he used the words 'that stuff'....Now...amphetamines were never banned for use. How do we know what he means by 'that stuff'....thats where Selig simply cant suspend him.
You guys can hate Bonds all you want. All he did was generate hundreds of millions for the game while they knowingly allowed his shenanigans, and now they want to nail him to please everyone. Its sad guys. I dont like Bonds either. But thats cus hes a jerk. Selig and management is to blame.

Selig is a joke. McGwire lies and is OK. Bonds lies and is OK. Giambi has come the closest to telling the truth, and HE is the one who will be suspended? You're a freakin' hypocrite, Bud. Get over yourself and try to do something that cleans up all of baseball, not just find a scapegoat.

Moondizzle - agreed that Giambi has never admitted to steroids - My main point is I get sick of hearing that steroids weren't illegal in the 90's. Federal Law trumps baseball's rules and there was a rule against steroids in baseball. The union was just too powerful to protect the integrity of the game while they (union, players, owners, etc) all lined their pockets.

if i hear another thing about steroids.... omg... i just want to sit down at night and watch the yankees and not hear a another word about this topic....
WHO CARES?! i just want to see the game... i don't care if they have cocain or steroids or horse tranquilize in their system... who cares!? i just want to watch baseball...
its the 70 hr's and the 550ft homeruns and the 103mph fastball that everyone wants to see... guess what... steroids will give that to us... if they want to put that in their body go right ahead... i don't care... its not my body... and thats the beauty of living in America... free to choose what we want to do...
now if Bud wants to act like its sooo wrong... then stop acting like a B*%@& and sit down like a man with the players union and force them to start testing every player out in the open once a month....
Bottom line... any player that doesn't want to be tested is guilty... and the players who don't mind being tested are clean.... if u knew you were clean and knew there were other players around you taking steriods and out performing you because of steroids... wouldn't you push for testing??
Its like when you were in 5th grade and the teacher said "ok everyone... little Billys toy is missing from the classroom... everyone open your bookbags...." well guess what... if u know u don't have it your going to gladly open your bookbag to prove your clean... the only people that don't want to open their bookbag (get tested) are the ones that are stealing!!!!!

Neither MLB nor any federal authorities can base any action against Jason on the leaked (illegally, might I add) grand jury testimony in 2004. He gave that testimony in exchange for immunity, and if his lawyer was worth anything, it's full immunity. They also can't base it on the USA Today article. He gave no dates and no specifics on what "that stuff" actually was. Obviously, he knew that the general public would know what he was talking about, but he hasn't actually admitted to anything. I know that he met with MLB, but he was represented by legal counsel at that meeting and has been operating under the advice of both his lawyers and the MLBPA lawyers. I can pretty much guarantee you that he hasn't said anything that could be used against him. Selig is trying to indict and convict Jason in the court of public opinion. I suppose he's partially succeeding, except for the fact that Selig is coming off worse than Jason. Selig will suspend him, the MLBPA will grieve it and WILL WIN. Selig isn't after Jason, he's after the precedent. This way, if any small shred of evidence about Bonds comes out, he'll be able to discipline him too. It's a witch hunt, plain and simple.
