Niners quarterback hurts shoulder

Alex Smith lost his starting job as quarterback of the 49ers, and now he's unlikely to be available in today's season opener because of soreness in his throwing shoulder. During Friday's practice, Smith sustained what coach Mike Nolan described Saturday as "a non-contact injury" to his right shoulder. A club spokesman said Smith didn't feel any discomfort until after the practice, and Nolan wasn't aware of it when he talked to reporters Friday afternoon. Smith told The Chronicle on Thursday that his shoulder felt fine, but earlier in the preseason, he said it wasn't 100 percent.

2nd string, not starting? Non-contact? Could be more to this story......

Non-contact shoulder injury? Sounds like tendinitis to me.

Non contact injury. That's always good news to a QB! Especially a young one.

Culpepper's available! He comes with a great attitude and a "chip" in his shoulder too!!!

When will the Niners get a new park as "Candlestick", or whatever cheesy corporate sponsor holds the naming rights now, the one they are playing in depresses the hell out of me. They still have those 1,000-2,000 seats whose view is completely obstructed.

The Alex Smith project will be done in SF at the end of this year.

Niners can't get a break. I really hate to see them fail every year considering their dominance back in the day. I am not a fan, but dang it still sorry to watch. Frank Gore has got to hate reporting to camp knowing he is going to be the only one to produce the whole season.

Smith is a huge bust. Whoever drafted him should lose his job too.

Tell it like it is

The GM was like in love with him or something. Passed over Rodgers for Smith.

Yeah, I have to say ALex Smith is going to go down as one of the biggest busts in league history.

I didn't think for a second that he would be a fit with Mike Martz

How do you know when a 49er QB hurts his throwing arm?

They should bring in Simms.
