Why Tigers want new shortstop

Besides trying to find someone who would take Gary Sheffield, acquiring a closer, and perhaps signing a starting pitcher, the Tigers will also have to head out in the free agent market for a shortstop. The feeling is Edgar Renteria will not return. The conclusion is simply this: Renteria can't play in the American League. The Tigers thought they were obtaining a steady shortstop and good hitter, but he's been far from that. There's not much out there for free agent shortstops, so you wonder: Would the Tigers ever be tempted by Julio Lugo?

Tigers were great last year, but when the ship starts to sink, did they actually think the names would stick around?? Sheff will retire rather than get picked up. Nobody wants that problem in the clubhouse. He and Bonds are gonna sit and complain about how they are getting blackballed by the league and the Tigers will fall back to where they are supposed to be....back in the cellar boys.

Why does fannation take every one of its rumours from the Boston Globe for MLB.

Get bent. They thought...they thought...is that how you build a baseball team?

Lugo is usually a good defensive shortstop. That's what the Tigers need. Maybe Lugo would be okay in Detroit. As for Sheff, stick a fork in him.

Lugo is usuallya good "defensive" SS? Are you mentally challenged? He was broght to the Bosox for his bat which at one time back when the Rays are still the D-Rays wasn't half bad and made up for his error proned defensive. Defensive SS... Lugo.. I hope you're kidding. In future think then type. I hope the Tiger's front office is as foolish as you are. Lowrie's doing well for us so PLEASEEEEEE take our "Good defensive SS" and his bloated contract. Finally just bc a SS hasn't hit well in 2 plus years doen't make him a good defender.

I think Edgar's range has decreased and he probably needs to look at a new position.

I would think maybe the Dodgers could be interested in him.

Pardon my poor grammar and typos I'm apparently a little challenged this morning as well.

No, don't help out the Red Sox..let them get through Theo's mistake on their own.

September 7, 2008  01:17 PM ET

They better look for more than a SS..

September 7, 2008  05:56 PM ET

The Tigers have a good lineup, but a terrible pitching staff all around
They need a lot of help to be relevant next year

September 7, 2008  06:23 PM ET

lugo is not a defensive ss he is awful defensively 15-20 errors a year

September 7, 2008  06:24 PM ET

it doesnt matter if the tigers take lugo or not cuz lowrie is the starter so the tigers taking him doesnt help us other than money where we have proven we dont need help

September 7, 2008  08:52 PM ET

Cush, you obviously know little about America's pasttime. Lugo has made several errors this year, but he also makes plays some other SS's can't. You must be trying out for a part as Captain Obvious in stating that the Sox would be better served with Lowrie. Well, duh. But Lugo would probably be a better fit for the Tigers than Renteria, who needs to head back to the NL, maybe LA or San Fran.

Bad trade by the Tigers in the first place. Basically, they gave up Jair Jurrjens and prospect Gorkys Hernandez (who will be a big leaguer) for one worthless year by Renteria. He has been hitting well lately, but I don't think he'll stay healthy enough to make a difference next season. Stupid trade.

Nah, the economy is down and people aren't eating out as much. The big spending on the Tigers is about to end as people aren't buying enough of the owners Pizza to keep chasing his childhood dream of making the Tigers winners.

The Tigers may be stuck dropping Renteria, having Boston pay the 3M buyout, then trying to re-sign him for a lot less money than his pick-up option calls for. Or, give Santiago a shot. We don't have anyone in the minors that is ready yet.
As for Sheffield, anyone who thinks that he will retire and leave 13M on the table is dreaming. He will be back next year. My guess is they give him a couple of months to sink or swim. If he sinks, cut him and eat the rest of the deal. May as well give a kid a chance. Hessman would have put up better numbers in the Majors this year than Sheffield did.
