Tigers, Cards favorites to land K-Rod

While the Tigers are an early front-runner for Francisco Rodriguez's services, don't rule out the Cardinals. They will likely fall short of a playoff berth because of their bullpen. Through Friday, they had 30 blown saves and 30 bullpen losses, both worst in the league. They've lost 12 games on walkoff hits, 21 losses have come in the opponent's last at-bat, and 14 losses came after they led through seven innings. While Dave Duncan is a tremendous pitching coach, he is not a magician.

It's a shame the Brewers are so cheap. They could REALLY use some pitching in the relief and mid relief area's.

he will get huge money wherever he lands but it wont be with the cards or tigers

HA!

September 7, 2008  09:12 AM ET

They may be front runners, but he won't be going anywhere. Angels live on their pitching and the ability to close a game if only ahead by a run or 2. Run production has been a problem all year, but the pitching has been able to take care of business regardless. NO WAY they are going to let the best thing in their Bullpen to walk. Count on Arte to open his wallet and secure his closer for at least the next 5 years. Tex is a rental and won't be signed again so the dough will be there.

this is sweet if he goes to the tigers

Cmon K-rod... stop doing this.. worry more about your career than an extra 2 million a year. Name another place where you get a guaranteed 50 SVO a year where you NEVER have to pitch more than an inning and a lot of the time pitch just for 1 out.... think more than money K-rod, you're going to ruin your legendary career.

September 7, 2008  11:02 AM ET

BUT, I find it very likely the Halos would have zero problem letting K-rod go... Arredondo isnt in the majors for nothing. 1.43 ERA... hes K-rods replacement if he chooses to leave.

September 7, 2008  11:08 AM ET

In other words, if this turns into a bidding war, expect the Halos to hold up the white flag early... yes losing the best closer in baseball will hurt but many people think Arredondo is the future closer of baseball and with their incredible rotation 6 or 7 innings a start is reasonable. Then have Oliver (if a 6 inning start)- SHields- Arredondo.. I would take that any day.

Closers are overrated in MLB. K Rod will get a big check, but he seems like his pitching motion will break his body down before long. I can't see a smart team signing him to longer than a 3-year deal.

September 7, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Name one, just ONE pitcher who has been signed for big free agent money and gone on to carry his team to the World Series. Ok, there is Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, but neither got bank breaking cash and both have been plagued by injury. The Tigers need a lot more than a closer. This reads to me like another press release by a player's agent trying to pump up his client's value.

September 7, 2008  11:37 AM ET

I see no way that the Cardinals will shell out the kind of $$$ it will take to land Rodriguez, and I am nearly certain that they wouldn't give the long term kind of deal he will want.

His pitching motion and potential breakdown is a concern, and the Cardinals have been hurt badly by paying pitchers to sit on the DL the last few years.

I'd put the odds of him signing in St Louis at about 2%

September 7, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Tell it like it is that seems to be the popular misconception.

If the Indians or the Cards had HALF (not even all, even though K-rod would eliminate MOST of them) but just HALF the blown saves not blown they would be leading the division.

Theres NO way closers are overrated.

If the Cardinals where really serious about getting a closer. They would have gotten Brian Fuentes at the trade deadline

September 7, 2008  11:49 AM ET

I don't agree with that.....the Cardinals went hard after Fuentes at the deadline, but the Rockies were simply asking to much for a two month rental, since the Cards would have been unsure they could sign him.

I expect them to try again to land Fuentes in the off-season, but they weren't willing to give up the 3 premium prospects the Rockies wanted for a two month rental.

September 7, 2008  11:50 AM ET

Any contract over 3 years for a closer is financial suicide. Pitchers like Mariano Rivera, who has been closing effectively for the past decade, are the exception to the rule. Too often, you find yourself with an Eric Gagne et al, stealing money because hitters figure them out and/or they burn out from over use.
