Oft-injured Hampton in demand

Mike Hampton, who turns 36 Tuesday, will likely pitch himself into a new contract - believe it or not - after his eight-year, $121 million deal ends this year. While it was one of the greatest bust deals ever, Hampton has gone 1-1 with a 3.81 ERA in his last four outings, all quality starts. He is resigned to the fact that he won't be back in Atlanta. But a lefty is a lefty, right? "It'll be a one-year deal somewhere," said a National League GM, "but given the way he's throwing, I'll bet you there'll be a few teams - especially in the National League - who will be after him."

I honestly don't think Hampton will be back next year

September 7, 2008  09:11 AM ET

A one-two inning mid-reliver and that's it.

September 7, 2008  09:11 AM ET

him and mulder would make a great 1-2 on the all DL team

You forgot Carpenter

September 7, 2008  09:20 AM ET

My old lady worked with some of his relatives in Idaho so we watched him dominate then get paid the big cash and never heard the end of it. I have to laugh at them now because if you go to Wikipedia and look up "Epic Failure" it has a picture of him signing the $121 deal!! Much like the Gary Matthews Jr deal, it goes to show that owners will jump at anything. 1 year and they are getting PAID.

With Hampton wearing a **** support just so he can limp out there and pitch, I'm thinking MLB minimum..... probably the four HR effort yesterday didn't look so good on his resume.....

September 7, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Hes a lefty who has gone a respectable 3.87 ERA in 4 quality stars this year. Thats enough for some team to give him a contact based on incentives

September 7, 2008  09:46 AM ET

BTW: the Gary Matthews deal was funny to me. A few years ago, he was brought to Atlanta to play LF..... supposedly no competition.... they cut him because he was so lazy.... terrible work habits..... great skills, but as lazy as his
Dad, who I once saw sit in a folding chair down the leftfield line when his team was batting during spring training rather than actually walk back to the dugout..... like father, like son.....

**** = b*all s*ack..... geez....

Every time I see a story about this clown I thank God for the Colorado school systems....If not for them, the Mets would have signed this load to a long term contract in 2001.

September 7, 2008  10:18 AM ET

COLORADO SCHOOLS ROCK!!!

September 7, 2008  10:20 AM ET

I can see it now,...he changes his name to Garcia, signs with the mets, announces that the NYC Schools are the greatest ever, and goes on to win 34 games next year before being shut down for the rest of the year by July.

Granted hes been injured alot.Alot!! When he is on, he is a left handed version of Brandon Webb(my pic for NL Cy Young),but when he is off, like last nite,it could get really really ugly!!

September 7, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Sir Robin, Good analysis. My family have had season tickets forever and when they signed Matthews they were extatic. I said look past the last year and tell me he is worth even HALF of the contract. They weren't very happy after that. Now they understand.

September 7, 2008  10:33 AM ET

What are his #s this year??

September 7, 2008  10:45 AM ET

As long as the school systems are good...ay enough is enough

September 7, 2008  10:46 AM ET

He'll prob. break an eyebrow on the flight over to sign the new deal.

September 7, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Anyone who lands this guy is SETTING SAIL FOR FAIL.

Any decent pitcher signed to a low-cost, one-year deal is worth the money. Look at Bartolo Colon this year. The Sox signed him to a one-year deal, and he picked up a few wins. Hampton will go somewhere next year, and probably do a decent job. Just don't count on him for more than about 20 starts as your No. 4 starter.
