Is Titans' Jeff Fisher overrated?

He's the longest tenured head coach with his current team in the NFL. He is paid millions. He is a darling to the national media. He also owns only five winning records in 13 full seasons. He's gone 8-8 four other times. He's made the playoffs five times. All of which raises the question: In a transient profession in an ever-changing league, how has Jeff Fisher managed to become entrenched as the Titans' coach? Make no mistake -- his job security rivals any coach in the NFL. He is under contract through the 2011 season, at an annual salary approaching $6 million. Likewise, he commands uncommon respect both within the Titans organization and among NFL power brokers. He is, in short, Bud's boy. Titans owner Bud Adams has made it clear that he wants Fisher running his team for now and the foreseeable future.

Bud Adams must be a patient man. Unlike teams that demand a winning season and fire the coaching staff every season, Adams is comfortable with mediocrity.

Hmmm...well he had to rebuild after Jack Pardee left him an aging unit to transition from run and shoot to a standard offense. Then came the post-salary cap hangover years from long lucrative deals for George, McNair, Dyson, Mason, Rolle, et all others where this team had little talent for 3 or so years. He will live and die with Vince Young, whom in my opinion isnot much better than Kordell Stewart. But, you cannot deny Fisher's ability to rebuild and mold young talent.

As a lifelong Titans/Oilers fan stuck in NY Giant country, he is the backbone of the franchise. This man has been around to break up the Buddy Ryan/Kevin Gilbride fight in 94.

He helped the team move from Houston to Tennessee and still put a competitive football team on the field. Being Chris Chandler or young Steve McNair as your QB.

Jeff Fisher is a grade A head coach.

He knows how to manage a GAME. If it was not for him the Titans would be perennial doormats.

I remember when he was negotiating his new contract with the team there was a laundry list of other NFL teams that were drooling to see him go on the open market.

Some guys get a pass no matter what happens, and some do not. He just happens to be one of the " Teflon " guys. Does not make him good or bad. Just is. His record as a coach is what it is, and it is all his. He has been doing it long enough to judge him. He is a moderately successful coach that escapes much scrutiny.

...and T&R just figured this out, amazing.

Not many coaches would stay calm when the owner drafts Vince Young for QB and then fires a great offensive mind like Norm Chow (per request by VInce Young). Plus Jeff has pictures (LOL).

September 7, 2008  10:49 AM ET

It's not his fault Vince likes to take his shirt off and hang out with a bunch of men at a bar.

September 7, 2008  11:03 AM ET

Fisher is a super coach. If the Titans let him go, about 20 other teams would be offering him a job within a couple of days.

September 7, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Imagine what his record would be with a NFL Quality QB? At least Vy is good for ticket sales.

50yearfan - Who were you referring to with this sentence:
"A simple case of the Legend being bigger than the man."

Jeff Fisher or Vince Young?

I wonder if Bud offered the head coaching position to Mack Brown (with Mack knowing VY was part of the package) if Mack would take the position?

September 7, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Yes.

Tell It is right..........he would be snatched up quickly if the Titans let him go...... Fisher is a great coach who has often worked wonders with marginal talent levels

how many of the other 31 teams would love to have 9 of the last 13 seasons at .500 or better?
what coach would you replace him with, that would be an upgrade?

I always thought so! Not that I think of him much...just saying!

I couldn't care less about the Titans, but Fisher is underrated. He his team is always prepared to play and he does great with what he has to work with. Would love for the guy to coach the Bills.

September 7, 2008  12:50 PM ET

He's a tremendous coach, but I don't understand their reasoning when they don't draft any decent WR. That was a big thorn in the side of McNair. He will definitely find a team immediately if they let him go. BROWNS 33 COWBOYS 27
