OSU player criticizes USC

Ohio State's lackluster performance Saturday against Ohio will no doubt make the topics list when USC reconvenes for a team meeting tonight. And the starting point, among players anyway, could very well be Buckeyes wide receiver Ray Small. Small caught five passes and returned a punt for a touchdown, but it was his post-game comments that are sure to incite the Trojans. Small, a junior from Cleveland, told ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg that he visited Ohio State and USC when he was being recruited out of high school. "As I took my visit to USC, I'm like, 'How are they successful? They're not even serious about the game,' " Small said. "Before the game, they're all going crazy. Me and [Buckeyes defensive end] Rob Rose was on the visit and I'm looking like, 'Wow.' And then the coach said, 'You better get out of here. It's 'bout to get hectic.' "And then I come [to Ohio State] on the visit and before the game, it's all quiet, everybody getting taped, coaches talking. It's the total opposite."

I guess then maybe Ohio St. needs to relax more. Maybe then they can actually live up to their hype instead of losing the title game(s) they play in. What a joke.

September 7, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Maybe he's pissed that he didn't get any booster love at USC as he did at OSU?

Seriously though, different programs are run differently, naturally. For all he complains about USC, have they not been as or more successful than OSU over the last 5 or 6 years?

All will be settled or so one hopes next Saturday.

USC coach Pete brings some spirit to the game. Maybe that is why his teams are always in the top of the top 10.

September 7, 2008  10:19 AM ET

I'm not a USC fan by any means but I would want my team to get jacked up before a game. It's just that my Irish haven't had much to be jacked up about lately!

September 7, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Myabe Rob Rose (from Cleveland) needs to understand that there is more to life in Los Angeles than in Columbus; or maybe no one was that excited about his visit. Did he actually get to meet any coaches (LOL)?

September 7, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Jeez. The way the Big 10 and tOSU are looking so far, you'd think the Buckeyes would want to lie low.

September 7, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Why would Ray Small fire up USC with his comments. Is he crazy. Thsy may have been able to sneak up on USC. Not now.

Jabril, you hit the nail on the head. Buckeye football and obsessing about Michigan football is all buckeye fans care about. Buckeye fans make the Taliban look warm and fuzzy.

September 7, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Pete Carroll allows his players to relax all week and work on what needs to be fixed. Pete does his coaching on Mon-Fri and turns his guys loose on Sat. It seems to be working.

That was very funny

September 7, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Ugh, Ray Small... please shut up. Due to you giving them excellent bulletin board material, I expect you to play the game of your life. When will players learn to keep their mouth shut, at least until after the game?

September 7, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Obsessing about Michigan football is all we care about Warden? As I can recall you've posted on almost every single Ohio State message board. Quit calling the kettle black. And Tressel obsesses about Michigan football, but that seems to be working out for him

Good luck Bucks. You guys need to bring it, but the best 2 teams in the nation will not be there. OU and UGA are the best at this point in the season.

September 7, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Small just confirmed what everyone was already thinking.....Ohio State is LAME!

September 7, 2008  11:51 AM ET

SEC-PAC, I take it you haven't seen the Sooners play yet this year.

September 7, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Week 3 the wheat and chaff get separated.

Here are some observations from Week 2.

USCs win over Virginia turned out to be overrated - Virginia beat Richmond 16-0.

UGA is an offensive juggernaut but the defense needs to blitz to be effective. The kickoff team for Georgia is horrendous and could cause them to lose a game this year. Knowshon is the best RB in the country - sorry OSU Beanie fans but he is.

OSUs offense played poorly. Pryor has talent but let his emotions get the best of him. The defense did not look as good as I had hoped against the 2nd team QB from Ohio and Laurinitus got blocked pretty good a few times which I was surprised. OSUs receivers looked very average as did their backup RBs.

Oklahoma's Bradford is a legit Heisman candidate. Probably the best QB in the nation. OUs defense gave up a lot of points and looked soft.

Florida's offense is not as good as advertised. They certainly are not as good as last year and the loss of Ingraham will really hurt them as Hernandez is not close to being as good. UF still has no good RBs. Harvin looked a tad slower but still faster then most. Blitzing UF is the key to beating UF. Florida's defense looked pretty good against an average offense with a RS Freshman QB.

Auburn's defense looked ok but did not impress on offense. Juco QB will be starter next week.

West Virginia - nothing to say really.

Alabama's offense looked like the Alabama we are all familiar with. Defense was solid.

September 7, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Hey Ray Ray, aren't you the kid that got on Tressel's bad side and he took away your #4 jersey? That's what I thought.

Maybe Ohio State needs to get crazy before each big game, cause what they are doing now isnt working.

September 7, 2008  11:59 AM ET

SEC_PAC_FAN, did you watch the OSU game? Pryor let his emotions get the best of him? They only let him throw 2 passes the entire game! That's not nearly enough for him to develop a comfort zone, and he should've played a little more. As for the fourth quarter, those were designed running plays to keep the ball and melt the clock, Tressel's favorite play to melt the clock has always been the QB draw

September 7, 2008  12:03 PM ET

etc_04,

The close up of his face on tv looked like he was about to throw a temper tantrum. Just calling it as I see it - literally. I like OSU but you guys stunk it up big time yesterday.

"you guys stunk it up big time yesterday."
Yeah I'll definitely agree with you on that one, we come out like that next week we'll get ours handed to us
