Huskies coach rips officials

Washington quarterback Jake Locker broke a tackle, tumbled into the end zone, and then harmlessly tossed the ball into the air. But the Pac-10 officiating crew flagged him, penalized Washington 15 yards, forcing Ryan Perkins to attempt a 35-yard PAT. "It really should be a no-call," Washington's remarkably composed coach Tyrone Willingham said. "But it's one that they have to call when they see it." Washington offensive coordinator Tim Lappano, clearly knowing the effects of that flag, followed the officials into the tunnel after the game, his screams echoing off the walls.

I agree that it should have been a no call. However, for a coach to follow the officials after the game and scream at them is also unacceptable. When the game is over you shake hands and move on. You lead by example.

Since when are flags flying for players not handing the ball back to the officials? What the? I didn't see the game, but it must have been tossed in such a way the official thought it was B.S. Somethings missing from the description of the act.

heh. Hurts don't it, Ty?

Gotta love them Pac-10 refs.

This excessive celebration rule is without doubt the most STUPID IDIOTIC BRAINDEAD rule i have ever heard of in my life.I dont agree with taunting the crowd, or opposing players after you score(neither of which was done) but to cost a team the chance at winning a game because a player throws the ball up in the air and celebrates, just blows my mind.
And no i am not a Washington fan i am actually from Australia and am still shaking my head in disbelief.

Devo, it was a bizarre call. Truly. Justifiable within the rules, but still a stretch. I'm not going to say Washington got screwed, but a questionable call like that is no way to end a game.

September 7, 2008  11:12 AM ET

When officials bizarre calls start to affect the outcome of games it brings into question the integrity of the whole sport. When an official is apparently "looking" for a penalty it makes me wonder just how much he has bet on the game.

The ref's must have been thinking usc was playing.

September 7, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Rules are rules, and a win is a win. I know the Utes escaped with one last week at Michigan. I'm more interested in how BYU will fare against UCLA next game. Would not be surprised to see all the BYU "BCS Buster" talk disappear after that one.

Sounds like a ND fan LOL

That was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. Excessive? The kid just scored the potential game-tying/winning touchdown with two seconds left against a Top 15 team! I watched at least a half dozen more "excessive" celebrations during different games yesterday that were not called. Absolutely ridiculous!

September 7, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Totally not fair. Their kids for God's sakes and they can't celebrate? Fools.

September 7, 2008  11:39 AM ET

HORRIBLE call! It was a game tying touchdown, at home, against a ranked team. You think there might be just a little emotion flowing there? He wasn't in an opponent's face, taunting, beating his chest, exclaiming "MY HOUSE" or anything. He was genuinely happy! Let's just roll out the robots to play this game ...

September 7, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Pac 10 refs strike again but this time against their own.

At least they didn't award an onside kick to the kicking team after the ball was touched before it traveled ten yards and RECOVERED by the receiving team.

September 7, 2008  11:50 AM ET

SoonerinAtl get over it already. It was two years ago.

Guttor, it'll be interesting to see how the calls go in the UCLA game after all the talk about the play calling this week.

September 7, 2008  11:50 AM ET

That was THE most ridiculous call I've seen in the last 5 years of watching college football. The crew should NEVER be allowed to referee a Division I game again. EVER.

That being said, if the U of W can't convert a simple 35-yard PAT, then they're not the caliber of team anyone needs to worry about. Period.

September 7, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Add to a list of already bad calls this year. The refs need to stop this before they ruin the game.

September 7, 2008  12:38 PM ET

the rule against throwing the ball in the air is straight forward and unambiguous -- he threw the ball in the air, so he gets a penalty. if the call had been made earlier in the game, would everyone be whining now? if the extra point had not been blocked, would everyone be whining now? if Washington had scored more often in the first half, none of this would have happened. suck it up, folks! I watched another game when the refs threw the flag when a QB scored and simply twirled the ball away ... no outrage there! get over it. BYU's victory should not be diminished because an official made a call that was correct, and then BYU's guys blocked the extra point. who's to say they wouldn't have blocked it if no penalty had been called. BYU outplayed Washington the entire game, and the win was ... a WIN.

September 7, 2008  12:47 PM ET

The officiating has been piss poor already this season. Miami (Oh) challenged a call yesterday against Michigan that is clearly not a challengable call, but the officials allowed it.

The play was the backward pass that hit the ground and was pickled up by an offensive player before he was pulled down by his hair.

By rule, when the pass is ruled forward and incomplete (the call on the field) the call is not reviewable.

September 7, 2008  12:54 PM ET

The question is how does this affect Washington the rest of the season. Will they use this to fire up and try all the harder to prove themselves, or well they allow this to deflate them so much that they resign themselves to a long string of defeats. It could go either way.

September 7, 2008  01:16 PM ET

SoonerinAtl...I totally agree and recall that call (Duck game) with a scowl.

I also concede that it was 2 years ago and I should get over it...
If only 'twere so easy!
