Who will be next Phillies GM?
A second trip to the playoffs brings with it a vindication for the Phillies' way of doing things, which would open the door to an easy transition for whomever replaces Pat Gillick as general manager. A failure to reach the playoffs and one has to wonder if the decision that awaits team president David Montgomery is as easy as just staying in-house. This isn't about qualifications as much as it is about public perception. This isn't whether the two top in-house candidates -- assistant general managers Mike Arbuckle and Ruben Amaro Jr. -- are ready to assume the top position. It's not about whether they can do the job or if they have the makeup and intellect to handle the 365-day-a-year job. Both have a certain cache among the league hierarchy when it comes to someday elevating to the top front office position. Both have interviewed for open general manager spots around the league and both are highly respected. Amaro has been the Phillies' assistant general manager since 1998. Given the Phillies' need to support commissioner Bud Selig's goals of inclusion, he is also the sexy pick due to the fact that he is a minority and, more importantly, has a full grasp of the game's economic system. Arbuckle meanwhile -- in his second stint in Philadelphia -- has been with this front office since 1992 and is perceived as more of an old-school baseball man than Amaro. Arbuckle is a scout's scout, an evaluator of talent that revels in player development.

Irrelevant story. Whoever gets the job should check the fine print on the contract. It'll say "No help forthcoming at the deadline's" and "division title due to rival collapse not included".

Why not hire the most qualified instead of the "sexy pick" that makes Bud Selig tingle!

The Phillies have a lot of talent. Someone could walk into a good situation.

Of course they can. They could also walk into this same team with no starting pitching, no Burrell in left and Melky Cabrera "lite" in center.
Maybe with the money they save on Burrell, they could add some fans to blow out to left field a bit more. This way even Coste will turn into a HR hitter and have the philly faithful trying to legitimize his power.

I don't know what you have to do to be a GM, but to be the Commissioner you have to be a really bad car salesman first!

Good questen.indeed its not easy to be a Generial Manger of the Phillies. In that city OMG they have the toughest fans......

Generial Manger sounds like something I should've caught in college. Amaro sucks, Arbuckle sucks, Ed Wade was their mentor. Go get Cashman.

True you can catch Generial Manger from Temple chicks, no wait Villanova chicks.
Tell it Like it Is speaks the truth, the Phillies do have quite a bit of talent. Keep Burrell and like Weapon X says go for the CASH(man).

both amaro and arbucle have been with the phillies too long - they toe the company line- which is it's a business - with a bottom line..no real desire to win - just be competititive enought put fannies in the seats. we need a shakeup to get rid of dead wood,
sign "A" level free agents - ( no B or C level f/a - Geoff Jenkins are you listenin'), put some $$ into player development (instead of some the 30+ 'rookie' stiffs we currently have in triple A and invest in latin american talent. We probably need new ownership...
