Culpepper takes parting shot at NFL

In announcing his retirement last Thursday, quarterback Daunte Culpepper hinted that NFL teams were colluding against him. "No matter what I did or said, there seemed to be a unified message from teams that I was not welcome to compete for one of the many jobs that were available at the quarterback position," he wrote in an email that was distributed to reporters. "It seems that the stance I took in both Minnesota and Miami regarding my rights as a person and player has followed me into free agency." Culpepper took one final shot at the league, saying: "I now understand why so many people within the NFL community are uncomfortable with a player really learning the business. The NFL has become more about power, money, and control than passion, competition, and the love of the game."

I kinda don't care!

I wonder how long he'll stay retired.

It's not your personal stance, it's the fact that you are always injured and now suck! That's what makes teams uncomfortable.

Sorry...it's Timing, Location, and Money!

Grow up Culpepper, you were never as good as you thought you were. And your attitude didn't and doesn't help you. Hope you saved all your precious pennies.

If the NFL teams actually "colluded" it violates federal law and there would be an FTC investigation. That being said Drew Rosenhaus in the NFL or Scott Boras's players would make much better targets. These two shysters manage to poison two sports.

I agree...when you were throwing to Moss and C. Cater life was pretty tough huh?

Sounds like someone is a little butt hurt that nobody wanted to take a chance on an always injured and fragile QB. he needs to learn that it is in fact a BUSINESS. Passion and love of the game doesn't pay the bills. Since being a dominant fixture on the Vikings, he hasn't done anything to warrant a starting spot. All I know is that he won't be missed and it is good to see that the teams are willing to pass on him and groom their younger players. Lets face it, The Chiefs, 49ers, Ravens, Vikings, Lions, Falcons, Bills and Texans could all use a little help at the QB position but rather than get stuck with a player that would probably be hurt by week 5, they will take the chance on what they have. That isn't a conspiracy.....it is smart business sense.

Teams colluding against him? I guess his lack of success on the field doesn't have anything to do with no one wanting him on their roster.

I think it has something to do with that dance you did in Miami. I can't seem to get that out of my head. Eff the NFL, go open up a restaurant and enjoy some time off. You had a decent NFL career and hopefully didn't spend all your money on rims.

Now that is AWESOME!!! "I had a great career and all I have to show for it is a set of 30" Spinners on my 92 Caprice Classic."

"The NFL has become more about power, money, and control than passion, competition, and the love of the game."

And which did you side with when you negotiated your contracts?

September 7, 2008  09:57 AM ET

He has to understand that there are more mediocre, aging , injury prone, back up level QBs than there are teams. It isn't personal Dante, strictly business.

September 7, 2008  10:00 AM ET

I admit that he has not performed at his former level of play; but, when I see Joey Harrington still in the NFL it makes me wonder.

September 7, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Culpepper has shown that he's nothing without Randy Moss. New England is all set with Tom Brady. He should stay retired because no one cares.

September 7, 2008  10:12 AM ET

I think maybe they colluded against you because you suck.....and you were exactly as bad after your 2005 injury as you were playing before it happened. Nobody likes a malcontent who can't play.

Stay classy Daunte...

**Harrington is not currently employed.

September 7, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Sounds like sour grapes! After Carolina busted up your leg you
were scared in the pocket and sucked since. Where do you
think you couyld start? Which starting QB are you better than
right now?

He has been taken off of the NFL website. He's not even under historical players either. Seems like he has been kinda blackballed to me.

He was a great QB in his day and he's still pretty good. Randy Moss made him look good, but Randy Moss made Brady look good too. I'm not saying Daunte = Brady, I'm just saying that all Daunte's success isn't just because of Moss.
