How Knicks would use Milicic

Donnie Walsh's summer-long quest to trade Zach Randolph's cap-killing contract is back on full tilt with serious talks with Memphis in a proposal that would save the Knicks $10 million in the critical LeBron James' free-agent summer of 2010. Nothing is imminent, sources said, but Walsh and the Grizzlies discussed a deal that would send Randolph to Memphis for Serbian center Darko Milicic and Marko Jaric, Europeans who have not lived up to their billings. A source said the Knicks would use Milicic prominently in a three-man rotation that would have Curry and David Lee starting up front and Milicic as first big man off the bench. The trade would reduce the importance of top pick Danilo Gallinari making an immediate impact.

Ger rid of Zach please! Not that Darko and Marco are any better but that would free up some money for future signings. Not sure about Lebron but at this stage the Knicks don't have anybody to run that offense that Dantonio likes to play.

Like Randolph or not, he has proven himself to be a 20 and 10 guy in this league. Further, what has Randolph done the last few years in portland and him time with the Knicks to keep the bad guy label.

If you want to say randolph does not fit the direction of the team, fine. but Randolph can play. That said, up-tempo is not him game. You also free-up 8M for the big free agent market coming.

This does not make the Knicks better, but that is not what this trade is designed to do. I did not agree with the draft pick. We will see where this goes.

It will be sad big time if Memphis takes the deal. What are they going to gain? More salary woes when they tried so hard to free up their salary. It won't make sense at all. They got rid of most of their high price players then they would make this deal w/ a troubled guy and at the same time very expensive, It does not make sense.

liontut- I was not talking about Zach as being a problem, his style of play is not going to fit in with what the Knicks are eventually trying to get to. You're right the trade is not going to help them but like I said this will help get rid of his contract and free up money!

September 8, 2008  08:19 AM ET

This deal is way more advantageous to the Knicks. Milicic has shown improvements in the last 3 years and is still very young. And for the price is not bad.

As a valet parking attendant is my guess.

September 8, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Why do people keep giving these guys chances? Darko should just go back to Europe. It's obvious he cannot play the NBA game.

September 8, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Zach can play and thats why he is trade bait. I'm not against Walsh moving him to clear some future cap room but I am against this deal. Millic and Jaric do not make the Knicks better.

September 8, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Don't laugh, but Darko could turn out ok in D'Antoni's system. He's huge but runs the floor very well for his size. I don't know why he never made it in the NBA. Maybe Larry Brown broke him the first couple of years kinda like the way MJ broke Kwame. He never recovered either.

I've watched games with Darko at 16 in the Serbian elite division, literally dominating and schooling grown 7 footers. It just never works out for everyone no matter how talented they are.

Anyway, it's probably a stretch. Window's closed for him now.

wooow finally a liontut sighting !!! What Knick super predictions for the season bro???????

Actually this makes sense. They realize there will be going no where again this season. This is called cleaning house that was messed up by liontut's "buddy" Isiah. Guess they are givng themsevles a couple years to clean house and get ready for some big fish. We'll see

September 8, 2008  10:17 AM ET

everyone can get a spot on the Knicks these days....

September 8, 2008  10:28 AM ET

the knicks will still suck without starbury no matter what anybody says!

September 8, 2008  10:29 AM ET

The Knicks suck with Starbury, so what's the difference?

I have been a Marbury fan since he was doing his thing at Lincoln but this guy doesn't make anyone better so for you to say they will suck without him when they suck with him is a bit off.

September 8, 2008  10:30 AM ET

& come on LeBron 2 the knicks when he is a free agent u have got 2 be kiddin me the guy is from cleveland & the greatest cav since he came in the leauge why would he leave the cavs.
Mike Brown better try 2 aquire a #2 & #3 scorer or @ least a #2 scorer because LeBron really has 2 work 2 hard 2 lead his cavs 2 the playoffs Mike Brown u better get crackin on keepin the King happy!

September 8, 2008  10:31 AM ET

i feel u j hova know doubt the knicks suck no matter now the cookie crumbles!

September 8, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Total team tear downs take 5+ years..... ask the Hawks..... of course actually signing LeBron would shorten that time span drastically..... they'd have to seriously overpay him to get him there.....

September 8, 2008  10:58 AM ET

LeBron will never play for the Knicks. Championships, NOT MONEY, is his driving force.

September 8, 2008  11:03 AM ET

No problem the dEE of dees. I'm with you on LeBron. I have been saying it for awhile now but he's not leaving Cleveland.

Always thought David Lee would be a great starter and deserves the chance to start.
