Will Bonzi return to Hornets?

Why have teams passed on Bonzi Wells? Where will Wells eventually land? Some questions are easier to answer than others. Along with his agent Merle Scott, Wells' name has remained relatively tucked away and obscure on the open market compared to the other rumors and signings over the past few months. There were rumblings early in the offseason that New Orleans may try to bring Bonzi back, but with the offseason drawing to a close there remain some apparent doubts in the Big Easy. After arriving in a trade from Houston in late February, Wells filled in nicely on the Hornets bench, despite finishing with his lowest overall numbers (8.8 points in 22 games) since his second year in Portland. At a bargain basement price (Wells made $2.3 million last season) though, New Orleans wouldn't hurt their financial situation by retaining Wells and perhaps those discussions could occur in the coming weeks.

Wells is a solid player. Several teams could use him.. must be asking too much. 2.3 is a bargain.

This is like another Ron Artest or Ben Gordon case where he should have signed long time ago for about 7-8 million a year but he did not take it and thinking that he would do better in free agency. Kings was willing to pay him 2 years ago but he opted out to go to Houston.

I agree with drj0514. He is solid and a lot of teams could really use him right now. The Hornets being one of them.

Bonzi can be a huge difference maker when his head is on straight. Impossible to guard with his strength, ability to shoot and post up game. Unfortunately he's usually a pest in the locker room. It would probably take someone like Jordan to keep him in line....maybe LeBron could do it.

yea he is a solid player but what the hell kind of name is bonzi?

September 8, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Bonzi is a cancer to any team.

bonzi is a punk but with the right coach i believe this guy can still produce. He would be a good 2nd option. Let the star tell Wells that he has to shape up.

Cleveland!!! Perfect opportunity for Ferry to wake up, and go to work.

September 8, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Bonzi does have some real nice skillsets...He could really help about any team in the NBA with his ability to get to the hoop, ability to put up points and his tenacity. The problem is Bonzi Boy is couple volts shy of 110 and does things that soon drop him out of favor with everyone this side of God...

If they can keep him medicated he will be okay..Elsewise, there are no real team enforcers to set him straight...David West...maybe

I see no reason for the Hornets not to re-sign Wells. I would think Wells is the certainly the best player available for that salary.

Hllywd;
About the only reason would be the team had enough of his sheningans last year...if they can stomach it, he can do a lot of things on the court

September 8, 2008  12:20 PM ET

I believe he could be great along side LeBron. It would take someone with that kind of star power to keep him in check....maybe. Makes it a VERY short list.

September 8, 2008  12:34 PM ET

I'm on the fence with him-
he had talent- but is aging & was never in the best shape
he also has had off-court issues.

Some players grow up, others don't.
For cheap- I'd resign him......but NOT for more than 2 years.
I don't want him getting comfortable...
I want him working for his next contract

Pretty good analysis and perspective on the issue

Lebron cannot control Bonzi Wells, the only figure Bonzi will listen to is someone like Kobe. All players in the league view Kobe as a proven leader and authority figure. What authority Lebron has by losing to a warehouse worker. Lame!
