Changes coming at West Virginia

With West Virginia wallowing at 1-1 for the first time in five years and almost falling out of the Top 25 where it has resided for 46 consecutive polls, coach Bill Stewart lectured yesterday about turning back the clock to get the Mountaineers ticking again. He spoke of returning this week to a "harder practice." He spoke of addressing defensive concerns such as deficient tackling and poorly disguised coverages. He spoke of reverting to a two-back offense and the belly option, rushing essentials the past few years. And he spoke of finding a comfort zone somewhere between stowing those Fiesta Bowl memories and relocating a carefree attitude: "Don't panic, don't play tight, just go play." So it sounds as if some changes are in the offing for Stewart and 25th-ranked Mountaineers, humbled by their 24-3 public spanking by East Carolina Saturday.

WVU fans need to realize Stewart is not a head coach after what happened Saturday. Plain and simple. By the way, if they do not open up that offense somehow, Pat White is going to be injured soon.

Go Mountainqeers! East Carolina a** kickin'. LOL

September 8, 2008  06:58 AM ET

Are the WVU faithful blaming this on RR? Coach Stew is soon going to be through.

WVU will be fine. Not sure what Stewart did around the country but he sure does have a lot of haters. I guess if he was more self-centered, only worried about the bottom dollar and didn't care about his players then he'd be more well liked. Some of you don't see class when it's right in front of your face.

Harder practices? Belly Option? Two Backs? Sounds like desperation to the TRUTH...

Honestly, did anyone outside of Morgantown expect this to work out? Let the strife begin!

September 8, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Funny. Some WVU players were delighted with the change of easier practices with Stewart over RR. They liked the more laid back atmosphere with Stewart and openly criticized RR and how he did things. Looks like there was a reason why RR did what he did. He got results from his players. After the drubbing WVU got from Eastern Carolina, no slouch of a football team themselves, i think it has become obvious that RR's way was the right way.

Not worried at all about WVU. That game meant a lot to ECU and they handled their business.

Congrats to the Pirates.

September 8, 2008  09:39 AM ET

J Hova,

Are you saying that WVU just over looked ECU and didn't take the game seriously?
If ECU handled their business, what did WVU do? WVU came to a gun fight and brought sporks to defend themselves. THEY GOT MASSACRED ON ALL FRONTS!
Getting embarrassed doesn't even begin to describe what ECU did to WVU. WVU potent offense ONLY SCORED 3 points!!! I can not chalk it up to an anomaly. Something isn't right when you get so horribly thrashed like you are one of Michael Vick's pittbulls.

To this, would it be safe to say you do not think Frank Beamer is a head coach, either? ECU put on a whoopin plain and simp

Why blame the loss on WVU...can't ECU just be a talented team that can actually play with the Big Boys this year?

September 8, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Word. Why are you blaming WVU. ECU played a great game and like I said they handled business.

Question West Virginia, not me.

September 8, 2008  10:16 AM ET

To be honest I am not a West Virginia fan, but in a Big East where only South Florida has looked competent so far, this team is still BCS worthy.

Louisville looked pathetic against Kentucky, Rutgers looks like they are falling back down to Earth, and Pittsburgh isn't as good as the analyst think they are.

Like I said WVU will be fine. Get by South Florida and they are the BCS designee once again.

September 8, 2008  10:33 AM ET

I dont think WV has ever really been that good... they are a ok team but i always felt like if they would play a good team they would have lost every year... their schedule is always 2 weak

September 8, 2008  10:39 AM ET

ECU deserves all the credit. The last time WVU didn't score a TD in a game was 2001. The bottom line is, you get what you pay for. I'm sure there are a few experienced, reputable coaches who would have jumped at the chance to be the WVU coach. Heck, they could have used the $4 mil they got from RR and Michigan to fill the position and had money left over.

September 8, 2008  10:55 AM ET

WVU should be blamed for not bringing their FOOTBALL team. In no way am I sugar coating what ECU did to WVU any more than I would sugar coat what ASU did to Michigan. Both ECU and ASU came to play and win and both showed what great football teams they are. But WVU didn't show up at all. Maybe it will be appropriate to label Stewart the Lloyd Carr of WVU, someone that took a too lax attitude in getting his team prepared.

ECU is a beast this year... it's not that WVU was that bad, it's just ECU is that good

"I dont think WV has ever really been that good... they are a ok team but i always felt like if they would play a good team they would have lost every year... their schedule is always 2 weak"

They don't make 'em too smart in Texas, I guess.
WVU would have played for the championship as a one-loss team last year because of their strength of schedule. Instead, they fell to rival Pitt when RR called the same two running plays all game against a stacked box, and then went on to DEMOLISH the same Oklahoma team that many experts are picking to be one of the best two in the nation at the end of this season.
ECU is good and deserves to be ranked at 14. WVU is lucky to still be ranked, but is a good team and has been for a long time. I recall them playing Notre Dame for a national championship back in the late 80s/early 90s(?), which proves they've had at least a couple decades of football dominance.

September 8, 2008  12:14 PM ET

As a WVU alum, I am disappointed in the way the team played, but I don't blame Coach Stew. The ECU lines dominated on both sides of the ball. You can't throw the ball downfield if the quarterback doesn't have time. I knew ECU was a good team, and I figured it could be a trap game for us. They dominated us, but we were not out coached. If you aren't a Mountaineer you really shouldn't be concerned with our coaching situation. You can't coach toughness, you can only recruit it, and that's what ECU has done. Congrats ECU, I hope you don't take the South Florida route and disappoint after your early season high.

September 8, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Hey folks, it is just one game. WV is a solid team that most likely felt they had the talent to win this game. #1 - ECU has a very good football team and #2 - you don't win if you don't prepare (just what you guys did to my Sooners last bowl season). Don't give up on your coach or your team, 11-1 or 10-2 are still likely season results and you will be playing in a BCS game.

September 8, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Really? I thought the "changes already took place? Announcing "changes" again after 2 games? WVU lost due to it having a "bad" game. Better now than later in the season. I believe there is going to be more of a transition involved than WVU believed earlier in the year. They will be fine, maybe they will incure a loss or two more than last year but they will enjoy a successful season never the less.
