Ravens: Flacco earns second start
A day after leading the Ravens to a season-opening 17-10 victory, rookie quarterback Joe Flacco received some good-natured ribbing from his teammates and a well-deserved vote of confidence from his head coach. "Flacco will be the starter this week," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said at today's news conference. The 18th overall pick in the Ravens' draft, Flacco essentially won the starting job last week by default because the team's other quarterbacks -- Troy Smith (tonsil infection) and Kyle Boller (season-ending shoulder injury) -- were sidelined with medical issues. But Flacco earned this next start after completing 15 of 29 passes for 129 yards and recording some impressive marks.

One good game does not make a great career. Kyle Boller had a few good games and look at what he has become.

Ryan Leaf won his first game if I remember correctly. We'll see how this goes.

This is his job to win or lose. It's really up to him. If he does not play good the next 2 week then Troy Smith will be ready to take his chance and maybe take it away for good.

Nobody said that after his first game he would have a great career. The article stated that "he earned his second start". Give him a chance.

Wow, this is a bad week in Cleveland. We get drilled by the Cowboys because of a passive defense and an offense that kicks field goals instead of going for it, and now our division rival and heisted team has 2 quarter backs that at least show flashes of talent, in Flacco and Smith.. This could be to be one of those ugly years....

I'm telling you - I saw Flacco play at UD against Delaware State. He is nothing special.

The Texans defense won't let him jog his way to the end zone. He lucked out in going against the hapless Bungals, lets see how he holds up against the Texans.
Either way he didn't lose the game which is what Baltimore needs.

Why not? Just produce wins and that should be enough. That being said I don't think he'll amount to a hill of beans.

*Shrug* 1 game against a team which barely belongs in the NFL doesn't make a career.

preach on cassidy, seriously, your steelers CRUSHED that Texans defense. If the Ravens have McGahee back and then throw Rice, McClain, and Neal at them the Ravens won't even have to throw the ball at all to win, we'll just run all day like we did over Cincy.
that last Ravens drive in the 4th quarter took up over 7 minutes and was just demoralizing. I mean, you've got a 3rd and 1 and give up 13 yards ?! pathetic!!!

Tonsil infection? FOr Pete's sake, who are the team physician. I'm sorry but with what is at stake here you would think the Doc could keep the QB on the field with proper anti-biotic treatment and some true care. Maybe scheudle to have the tonsils out during the bye week.

@bigblue - that's not what you said, either. You said, "The Texans defense won't let him jog his way to the end zone. He lucked out in going against the hapless Bungals, lets see how he holds up against the Texans."
Anyone reading it would assume you meant the Texan's defense was, if not "good", at least better that the Bengals. You're wrong on both counts.
I'm not sure this isn't what Harbaugh wanted all along. Really, if Flacco is your future, you'd want a veteran QB schooling him. Baltimore does not have that in front of Flacco, which is why, with a boring, no error, didn't lose the game performance, he's starting again.
Here's the thing, tho' - he confidence can be eaily shattered if it is "make a mistake and you're out." Baltimore seems to feel they ar e primed to go deep in the playoffs. Any mistakes and he will end up on the sideline.

Baltimore is sad because they can't judge QB talent. Can you say Derek Anderson!!! They always needed a QB but I guess they did not want a passing QB.

You are putting words in my mouth. The Bungals defense looked horrible on that play, a high school team would do better, and I would hope the Texans could.

uh, how about no.
see, Derek Flash in the pAnderson was a 5th round draft pick out of Oregon State where he was an INT machine. they placed him on the practice squad to pull up a reserve DB due to injuries to their def. backfield.
Phil Savage, like he's been doing for years, saw that and plucked him off there. Like i said, he's been plucking QB's off the Ravens practice squad for years now and now that one, MAYBE, is a diamond in the rough that's all Baltimore fans hear about.
Anderson will prove to be a one year wonder. His stats bombed the 2nd half of last year and it cost them a playoff spot.
Look at his stats against the Cowboys this past Sunday even AFTER the cowboys lost terrance newman to an injury: 11 for 24 (46%) for 114 yds., a 4.8 yd avg. per throw, one td in the end zone to a wide open Winslow.
The Brady Quinn era will beging soon enough in Cleveland, mark my words.
