Tebow fires back at Miami

Perception is a funny thing. On Sunday, Miami coach Randy Shannon complained about Florida's decision to kick a field goal with 1:55 left and the Gators leading by 20 based upon the perception the Gators were running up the score. "I'll just say this one statement: Sometimes, when you do things and people see what type of person that you really are, you turn a lot of people off," Shannon said. The Gators had a different view. "That's okay, but the only part that offended me was when he questioned Coach (Urban) Meyer," junior QB Tim Tebow said. "I have Coach Meyer's back on anything. To say something like that about Coach Meyer isn't true. He's one of the best coaches in the game, that's why I came to the University of Florida to play for Coach Meyer, play for the type of person he is. If you want to talk about him, you should talk about a lot of other coaches before Coach Meyer. You can talk about running the score up, I don't care. They are paid to stop us, and Coach (Dan) Mullen is paid to score. If they don't do that, oh well. But don't talk about Coach Meyer as a person and getting recruits, that's not necessary."

You showed some real class Florida. NOT!

Blame it on the BCS. If there was a playoff you wouldn't need to run the score up.

September 9, 2008  08:16 AM ET

It was 4th down. Why not kick the field goal? If you give the ball away on downs, Miami is going to try to drive downfield and score anyway.

Besides, I see nothing wrong with running up the score against a legitimate opponent. I do recall Miami being up on CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 49-7 with 2:33 left in the game, and Randy Shannon sent the field goal unit out on the field. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Sitation aside, Meyer really has these kids brainwashed. He's dirtier than a $3 bill and would probably step on his mother's throat to get a recruit.

haha thats funny. Who cares about this story. Miami played tough through three quarters with a whole lot of freshman against the big bad SEC. Florida won but I think anyone with two eyes could see Miami should be a great team in two years.

September 9, 2008  08:59 AM ET

I have to agree with TheUCanes1 here. Miami played Florida great for three quarters but couldn't hold on in the fourth.

Shannon has a good young team there, that should make some real noise in about two years.

Tebow, Just say "Scoreboard" and be done with it.

I really didn't consider that 'running up the score'. Just trying to make the bookies happy by covering the spread.

September 9, 2008  09:20 AM ET

I have to give Miami props.....they did hang with Florida for most of the game; they have some good young players.....agree JHova: two years and they will be making some noise.
Florida's offense looked disorganized at times. I realize that Tebow and Harvin are the playmakers, but other guys need to step up too.....their special teams played well.

The good news for Miami is that the rest of the ACC is bad too. They have a shot at getting to the Orange Bowl this season.

September 9, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Florida was on Miami's 11 yard line. What were they supposed to do? Punt? When you're that close, you have to kick a field goal.

the real question is: why did Tebow pass two times during that drive? Florida was going for a TD but couldn't get it. Just run the clock out; the spread option is supposed to be good at that anyways.

sony sucks

the spread was 21

1. The BCS takes into account win margin in all those stupid computer polls.
2. Urban Meyer is a pr*ck and could care less what anyone thinks. He will kick a field goal if he wants to kick a field goal even if he is winning by 100 with 20 seconds left to play.

And really, 2nd game of the year, you probably want your kicker to get as many in game field goals in as you dont know what the rest of the season will hold.

Miami: always talk, no walk. Boo hoo.

September 9, 2008  10:38 AM ET

If you don't want them to score, stop them.

September 9, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Shannon had no right to complain about the score. He played to "not lose" on offense and got what he deserved. He may turn out to be a good head coach, but right now he is not showing much as a game day wiz. Miami had nothing to lose; being close in the 4th wins nothing. Gators put eight in the box all night, Miami run game was stuffed, only 2 long passes tried and less than 150 yards of offense for the Canes. Plus he does have a short memory; last year he kicked a field goal with about 2 minutes left leading Texas A&M by 20 points.

Go Gators - Lets see if Randy is around for the next game in 5 years.

Exactly!

I dont think that was running up the score, I remember the late 90's when teams used to really run up the score!

Miami didnt win the game, but I think they got more out of it than UF. Young team with great potential.

September 9, 2008  11:45 AM ET

This is a rivalry game. Run up the score. When asked why he went for two despite a 36-point lead against Michigan, Hayes quipped, "Because I couldn't go for three." That is the mentality of a winner. The fact that Miami is complaining about class is an absolute joke. Randy Shannon is a born loser.

Shannon should shut his yap and , show some class Oh! I forgot this is Miami, and this stuff about how great they played, yeah right "Other then the gun shots,How did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln?
