Wagner's Mets career over

Billy Wagner, a 37-year-old closer, has probably thrown his final pitch as a Met, and perhaps as a major leaguer. The Mets announced Monday that Wagner would need season-ending reconstructive surgery on his left elbow to repair his medial collateral ligament and flexor pronator muscle. With one season left on Wagner's four-year, $43 million deal with the Mets, and with the recovery period expected to last a full year, the Mets will now move on without him.

He's a bum anyway, so who cares? Just a big mouth. Sure he can pitch, but he's no Clemens either. He should hang it up before it isd hung up for him.

I like Wagner, he has a big mouth but was a good pitcher

K-Rod is a free agent this winter. The Mets have no other closer options. I see a potential match. It's going to be an expensive match though...

Time to tend to the alpacas

September 9, 2008  07:07 AM ET

Good pitcher time to stop.. I hope he can step away and not be like others who continue to pitch even when their arms are shot... uh.. Rogers?!

I never like seeing anyone hurt long term, but there was a reason the Phils only wanted to offer Wagner 2-3 years. It'll also be a shame to see the Mets hold the bag for $10million all next year with no production to show for it. Kinda like the 3 years $24.5 million for Adam Eaton....OUCH!

WOAH! Something sounds very... ummm... prisoner about that.

At least he won't blow big games down the stretch like he did every oportunity he's ever had. Good during the regular season but in the big game he became Benetez.
Hopefully for them insurance will cover the final year and they can go after K Rod.

My understanding is that the insurance rarely makes a dent in the amount of money the team loses in a case like this.

I tend to agree with the Benitez comparison....Wagner looked great in (most) regular season games. But he seemed to struggle when the stakes were high.

I'm not sure on the insurance. I was under the impression that there was no insurance if there is a pre exisitng injury. Either way with the New Stadium opening they should be able to afford K Rod and a corner outfielder.
Wagner is the closers eqivalent to A Rod. Great until it counts.

September 9, 2008  08:46 AM ET

That's a shame.

The Phils decision not to offer more than 3 years now shows to be the correct choice. Great to see in the end the Phils made the right choice and hurt the mets in the mean time. Enjoy retirement Wags.

The only impact was the salary. I mean, geez, ya did the Mets a favor. If I were you, I'd be a bit upset.

September 9, 2008  08:55 AM ET

It's not like they were missing him the last month anyway. Who cares at this point.

How so? The mets are in a penent race and are suddenly without a closer that was having a bad season to begin with and now they have this chunk of change they need to pay the guy. If you call that a favor than hey we'll give you Adam Eaton too, that would be a hugh favor.

True but time will tell if he's missed the rest of the season.

I doubt the Mets will be able to outbid the Angels, and others, for K-Rod..... sounds like FMSD doesn't believe they'll need him since their bullpen has been so good lately....

September 9, 2008  09:15 AM ET

It's a shame he didn't tear his vocal cord muscles instead, he would rip his bullpen for pitching like shyte, then he would come in and blow another save. enjoy retirement............beat it..........

September 9, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Don't get me wrong-
Overall wagner has had an above average career as a closer.....

But he, like Hoffman, was never a 'big time' closer.
Has collected lots of numbers....but in a big spot-
you wouldn't really trust either

Why is it that this damage was not seen in the earlier MRI's that were taken? Did the damage occur just in that last pitching session? Something doesn't seem right....
