Hossa one-and-done in Detroit?

Marian Hossa arrived at Joe Louis Arena on Monday morning for his first -- and quite possibly -- only season with the Red Wings. With the salary-cap rules and the Wings' obvious desire to sign Henrik Zetterberg to a new long-term deal, Hossa is likely to be one-and-done in Detroit. He has become the NHL's version of the hired gun. Pittsburgh acquired him at the trade deadline last season and he helped them reach the Stanley Cup Finals. Now he's moved on to the defending champions.

Typical for these days in the NHL.........There was no way the Pen were going to sign him.

September 9, 2008  07:04 AM ET

It's not really typical of the NHL, Grossedout. Not too many players that jump teams like him actually.
He chose to turn down long-term deals that he was offered.
He either really wants that Cup...or he feels that he is invulnerable and injury-proof and can wait a year or two to sign a llonger deal.

September 9, 2008  07:10 AM ET

He is looking for the cup and getting deals along the way is gravy...risky if an injury happens.

September 9, 2008  07:16 AM ET

If he can help the Wings to another Cup, I'm all for that. As long as Detroit keeps Zetterberg and Datsyuk.

September 9, 2008  07:29 AM ET

Hossa is a rental. The aim is to let him go at end of season and free that money up to sign Zetts.

September 9, 2008  07:32 AM ET

You guys are fine but I must disagree with the article. The Wings always have options if they wanted to keep him. For his skill though, he is earning little and will likely move on after next year.

September 9, 2008  07:33 AM ET

It's pretty much a given that he is a one and done. Detroit will want to get Zetter signed and keeping Hossa long term will nix that, unless they dump alot of salary to keep him but what happens to the rest of the team then.

September 9, 2008  08:19 AM ET

It will be interesting to see how Hossa fits in.

If there is one team that could somehow figure out a way to keep all of them around, it would be Detroit.

September 9, 2008  08:26 AM ET

I bet he will be looking to resign with Pitt after this season. He said he signed with Detroit because he felt that he had a better chance to win the cup with them. I don't see much difference in the teams. I mean the series went to 6 games in the finals. You don't get much close than that. I see his reasons, but I don't see how changing conferences and playing for the team that won the stanley cup in 6 games against the team you just left makes a whole lot of long term sense. Plus the Pens will have a new stadium and with all the free agents they lost, he will ask for a lot of money, and get it from the Pens. I don't llike it, but that's the way I see it happening. The man is looking out for himself and that is it. Very selfish and not a very good team player.

September 9, 2008  08:30 AM ET

This is a misleading article. His point is if the Wings want him and he fits in with the team chemistry then more then 1 yr is possible. This does has it's restriction with the pay role. That said, if he wins a cup he can move on for more money no doubt. Right now he is a bargin, he won't stay that way forever. He will move on after 1 yr unless he likes being here so much he takes a huge pay cut again.

September 9, 2008  09:06 AM ET

How long will he keep up his bargain rate for a contender though. If he doesn't get it this year will he stay for another year at a discount or try somewhere else for less. If he does get a cup will he look for the money then or try for another cup?

September 9, 2008  09:14 AM ET

I think that the Wings are gonna repeat this year and Hossa is gonna take less money to stay with the Wings so he can win more rings.

September 9, 2008  09:15 AM ET

I don't see how this is news. Hossa made it very clear he was signing with Detroit a one year deal and that was it. He wanted another shot at Stanley before he explored other options. No secrets there. He came within a whisker of signing with the Oilers and may still do so after a year in Detroit.

September 9, 2008  09:28 AM ET

He had his chance for a long term deal and turned it down. Best of luck to Marian, but the Pens will most likely not go after him after the way he snubbed their offers.

I agree with this completely. If the Wings do repeat, and I believe they have to actually play the games before they give out The Cup (ask The Pats and Tom Brady about that) then he may stay for less to try to win it again

now that ryaan miller won't be on the market maybe detroit will have enough space to try and keep both Zetterberg and Hossa.

September 9, 2008  10:32 AM ET

You mean Pens couldnt match his offer........They had no cap space.

September 9, 2008  10:34 AM ET

I'd kind of like to see him leave before the season is up, so much do I dislike him.

But I would settle for him leaving after one run.

September 9, 2008  10:39 AM ET

This was pretty much a foregone conclusion. The Wings execs didn't expect to get him at this bargain price and length of contract. It's not only Z, but the Mule's contract is up at the end of the year. So I don't think the Wings will be able to afford what he'll eventually ask for.

However, we didn't expect to sign in the first place, so anything could happen.

I got to tell you, it is so much more civil here in the NHL threads. Reading the NFL threads, not only do the pages pile up, but the asinine comments build up as well. Brady deserved the injury? Geez, barbarians. Kudos to you all on civil manners. (Now everyone go ahead and prove me wrong!)

The main structure in the Wings payroll is that no one makes more than the Captain, which is Lidstrom. Hossa will be sweet for a year.
It was the same thing with Dallas Drake. A guy gets rented at a steep discount because he wants to know what champagne tastes like out of ol' Stanley. Fair enough.
Santapig, I'm going to be a little on the edgy side here, and hoping not to prove your theory correct by this statement, but I believe that smart hockey fans are of a specific "classification". Is that fair to say? I hope so.
I certainly do not expect the NHL to ever be associated with the thug life that many NFL players are leaning towards. And that has a certain demographic that follows the "thug life". Just stating the facts.
